There should be points off for going beyond the specified range. What if the pre-chorus slays and the rest is sub-par, and it's what saves the contestant, or another contestant would benefit from a linking pre-chorus but didn't include one because they followed instructions and is eliminated?

I don't think i'd ever use an old song, for these competition's i'd like to come up with fresh new lyrics. My old songs come from how I was back in the time when I wrote the song, I don't like to revisit the past

but the pre-chrous leads up to the chorus from the first verse, i usually write them I'm not used to not writing one xd

It's just the first round sis, let's not go too hard on them

Besides, there won't be a massacre with the eliminations, so all you need is to submit a decent song and you'll make it to round 2

I'm not trying to be messy or a negative Nancy out of the gate, but I think when specific instructions are given they should be followed so it's fair for all contestants. Sometimes less is more, and shows you can make an impact on the reader with little body.
