To an extent I would agree but there were other smashes like TMTC and TOL. Sugar and LMLYD were both pretty weak competition though
Don't forget UF broke records for fastest to 5 million ever. That's pretty massive if you ask me. So it's not like it "just had no competition"

TMTC peaked before UF went #1. It was never direct competition. The only song UF actually blocked was TOL.
After TOL peaked it was pretty much a free ride for UF at #1. About 5 free weeks at #1 with only an unpromoted soundtrack song and a Maroon 5 3rd single giving any sort of competition

Trap Queen is in a good position to become the next #1, to be completely honest. The streaming (#2 on Spotify) and sales (#4 on iTunes) are there, and it has climbed 37 positions on the all stations + recurrents pop radio chart in just 17 days, showing that it may indeed have a good showing on pop. It just entered the T20 on overall radio today.
It depends on how quickly SUAD closes the gap on streaming.

I think it's the fact that Wiz's song literally came out of nowhere. Most other mega-hits we could see an obstacle in sight.
I Gotta Feeling: This was very narrowly beating the competition at the end of its run. It was obvious when its time was up.
We Found Love: SAIKI seemed to be a big enough threat to keep it from the record.
Blurred Lines: We all knew Roar was on its way.
Happy: "All of Me" was a strong enough rival to ensure it doesn't break the record.
All About That Bass: "Shake It Off" was a strong enough rival to ensure it doesn't break the record.
Uptown Funk: TOL? No. Sugar? No. Well it looks like the coast is clear-and here comes Wiz to save the day!

SYA is the most random #1. I don't get how it's just catapulted into the Top 10 like that and then overthrown a 14-week #1 like it's nothing. Wiz hasn't even had a big hit before (well besides Black And Yellow I guess). I don't get it.

Still with SYA suddenly jumping out of NOWHERE to stomp on UF it seems like songs aren't meant to be #1 any longer than 14 weeks

This is what I'm talking about. The new rule makes Black Eye Peas' old record in 2009, 12 weeks with Boom Boom Pow and 14 weeks with I Got A Feeling look miles impressive. The formula now with streaming, videos from lyrics and music video, the formula is easier, etc makes it obtainable to log in consecutive weeks at #1.

As much as I am glad that Uptown Funk did not beat Mariah's record, I'm still scared for the future though. It seems that reaching 14 weeks can easily be done nowadays

I see both Feather's and Fridayteenage's points. "Uptown Funk" earned every week of its stay at #1, spending almost all of its weeks on top of all three of the major component charts, and it was not a walk in the park for UF. However, as I said in my earlier post in this thread, with the way longevity is trending, I do think a song will stay at #1 for 18 weeks some time between now and 2020 to 2025.
With airplay impression and streaming totals continuing to grow larger, a strong initial sales week will become less and less likely to put the song at #1 right away, even if a song is pushed onto Spotify and a lyric or even real video is put out right away. If it hadn't been for the unusual circumstances surrounding the super smash "See You Again," UF probably would've tied the 17 weeks at #1 record from 1947, and possibly broken it (I listed the record-holding song and artist earlier in this thread). There won't always be a SYA to stop a #1 song after 14 weeks.

SUAD really gained strong on streaming this past week, which it needed, and its sales are surging. It's airplay is already there, which is not the case for TQ (though I know TQ has a lot of streaming). I think SUAD can overtake TQ, which would cause TQ to peak at #3 either next week or the week after that and hang there for a bit (depending on the speed of M5's descent). I think SUAD will be the next #2 and #1 song, but I'm saying #2 is three weeks away, and #1 is four weeks away. I know "Pretty Girls" and "American Oxygen" are contenders too, but I don't think they could debut at #1

If Jason Derulo replaces Taylor Swift next week Ellie will be the only female left in the top 10.
Is that a record for males in the top 10?
