What's the worst thing that could happen if you did ask? He says no thanks and you move on with your life? Like you said this is someone you've only known for a short period of time and whom you've never met IRL, if they reject you it won't be the end of the world and you can move on to someone else who might actually have interest in you rather than hanging on to a glimmer of hope for this person.
