Being that the Carole King tribute from 2014 was only televised this year, it's painfully obvious that Gaga's changed so much in the last year - I am so glad she's much happier now. If 'You've Got A Friend' was (hypothetically) recorded and televised this year we'd be like..."what was wrong that day?" - she just doesn't beam in that performance like she has in all hers this year. Go Gaga!
I'm reading this old interview of Gaga's and she says this, I feel it's quite relevant to what's happening right now in the industry
Quote:
She explains she doesn’t mind about people downloading her music for free, “because you know how much you can earn off touring, right? Big artists can make anywhere from $40 million [£28 million] for one cycle of two years’ touring. Giant artists make upwards of $100 million. Make music – then tour. It’s just the way it is today.”

Gaga also said this back in the days about You and I:
Quote:
"I wrote this song, out of the deepest most pure, happiest place in my heart. And I don't want nothing from you; I don't want you to buy it; I don't want you to pay me anything to listen to it; I'm not even gonna put it on iTunes. I wrote this song because I wanted to write a great record. And I wanted you to hear it, just because I love you, and I know that all you care about is music and freedom."
I mean if you really love what you're doing like Gaga, you want nothing from it other than the love of the fans.

To play devils advocate here, it's all very well for her to say this because she is a big touring act. But, I do think it separates the stars from the fads and the artists from the puppets. Only acts with enough pull to sell tickets and enough talent to impress audiences would succeed. It would probably create a stagnant industry though with few new artists breaking through.
Regardless, free music is where things are going. Paid streaming subscription at most.
I'd like her to release an album in an experimental way. Whether it's a Spotify exclusive, or something more independent like a sponsored albumtitle.com page offering a free HQ download in exchange for an email address, with a download counter for bragging rights. That way she gets money from the sponsorship, attracts legal and illegal downloaders to one place and can measure more accurately how many people are listening to the music, and because they got their email - they can now try and get them to buy tour tickets and let them know about videos etc.
Not sure if I've said this, but I would trade "Just Dance"'s #1 peak for "Bad Romance"'s #2 peak. "Bad Romance" was more important in her career, and, though they both smashed, it would be more satisfying for "Bad Romance" to have the #1.
I wouldn't say that Bad Romance was more important for her than Just Dance. I mean, Just Dance was the song that made her famous. It basically did all the dirty work and the later singles profited from that.

"Just Dance" was a platform that allowed "Poker Face" to succeed, and I think "Poker Face" is what turned her from a flash in the pan to a viable force.
I think "Bad Romance" is more important because it's what made her into a superstar. She was larger than life, and no one could touch her. It's all of Gaga's commercial and cultural peak condensed into one song.
The Fame has JD, PF, LG, Paparazzi, BDR, Paper Gangsta, I Like It Rough, Disco Heaven
Th Fame Monster has everything except Speechlees and Teeth
Born This Way has MTN, BTW, Judas, Hair, Scheisse, BJAF, HML, EC, EOG
ARTPOP has Venus, G.U.Y, Donatella, DWUW, Swine, Applause

True, and she did say (in the same interview) that she feels a lot of acts are just lazy, and don't work as hard to get where they truly want to be. So I guess her thing is not whether she's making the money or not, but just that she wants people to listen to her music and enjoy it. Because let's face it, people don't really buy music like they used to.
That'd be amazing if she did do something like that. It would be something akin to Beyonce's self titled.
Get ha! I love ARTPOP, but I really do believe BTW is her best album. The production is amazing and the songs themselves are so much more expansive than her other albums. TFM is definitely a step up from TF as well, but they're all good albums in their own strengths.
