@Nicole watch Perfect Blue if you haven't already, it's edgy and inspired iconic films like Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. Miyazaki films are a little too cutesy to be representative of all anime films. Also the Queen of Pop was stanning for it and used it as an interlude backdrop back in 2001 or something, so u know it's good!
