does every song need a "hook"? i mean, maybe for a pop artist, yes, but true music doesn't need something that is catchy. it just needs to be a good song with good vocals and lyrics. that's what this song is. comparable to her stripped back, acoustic sets. she's never released a song that is stripped back, and so she really needed it.
of course there will be songs with big choruses (we've already heard HBHBHB and TE) and "hooks"
