Madonna's numbers are incredible given that the album leaked months in advance and that radio snubbed the single. I'm still pressed that the stupid rule of individual song downloads counting towards the BB200 gave Empire the edge

People only discount streaming when their fave doesn't benefit from it. I don't particularly agree with the formula, but they're basically making the best out of a crappy situation. Album sales are in the pits and so they came up with a new way to gauge the popularity of an album. It's flawed and puts older artists at a disadvantage, but it works. You've got to "get with the times" if you want that #1 album.

Madonna's manager having a mini-meltdown on Twitter is not a good look. I know they're not happy with that #2 but that's just how the cookie crumbled. Maybe they should've focused on the streaming aspect?

Of course she and her team are pissed. Like I said in another thread, a #1, even with low sales, is all labels and teams care about. They want that coveted top spot as it opens doors for tons of media play about "the number 1 album in the country". Without it, it's a huge blow to the brand and to the entire campaign. Not landing at #1 basically invalidates all the promo they did.

It's not even streaming that makes the big difference... I wish that people realized that. It is the tracks sold.

Not to throw Kelly under the bus, but it's better to maintain consistency w/o necessarily reaching the top than to come out extremely frontloaded @ #1.

I'd take a front loaded #1 if it meant the same amount of copies are sold regardless. Additionally, usually front loaded #1s will do better on average than the non front loaded counter parts under the same circumstances. Many non front loaded #1s aren't front loaded for a reason....especially as it relates to an established super star legend like Madonna.

Correct. And in that arena, Empire is pulling huge numbers a week while RH tracks have been essentially available since December.

But some will keep trolling every thread they can to speak on the matter, even if they're seriously uninformed on the matter.

I didn't even think about her releasing part of the album first then another and then finally all together. That definitely hurt her track sales (and streaming too, I would imagine)... Man. She definitely would have given Empire an even closer run for the top spot considering, of Empire's SPS total, only 3k (2%) is streaming and 23k (18%) is tracks.


Those leaks really ****ed up the entire era for her.

I'm shocked Madonna's numbers really surprise any of you. She struggled to hit #1 on iTunes all last week. Amazon discounted her album to $6.99. She didn't have the demand.

And with the lack of radio support as well, no one but her fans really knew the album was coming out.
