A lot of these artists operate on "fake it till you make it". Meaning cater to the public and what they expect of you as a "pop star". It's only later once they see that chart hits are just chart hits and nothing more that they feel the courage to take back the reigns musically.

Kesha knew her career was a joke because Dr. Luke kept making the mindless party songs when pretty much everyone was rooting for a Kesha ballad. She wanted to be taken seriously as an artist but knew it wasn't possible under the conditions.
