To answer the question of why don't you call your friends. Barely anyone does that anymore, LMAO. Everyone talks through text, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc. if they are not face to face.

I actually liked Plurk's interface a lot more but somehow just lost interest in it. Twitter seems less fun just because you do not have the mini-pages for each message sent. Otherwise, I think you would use it the same way as Plurk, but you cannot send a "tweet" to a select group of people like you can send a "plurk" in Plurk. I think Twitter has a nice layout for your own set of "tweets" and it helps that a lot more people use it.
