I really want to get into songwriting recently as a form of self expression for myself, but im very hesistant to do it. i am a self concious person and i can imagine people laughing at my lyrics as i write them by myself. I've never done any kind of writing by myself before, only for school. Teachers would give me good reviews when i tried but most of the time i barely drifted along in my english classes..
Any tips for someone who is basically a newborn at this? Should i try writing lyrics in a form of poetry before worrying about writing the verses/choruses/hooks, just as a start? Let me know anything you feel is vital to songwriting 101..
Writing in itself should be your main concern as a form of self-expression. If you want to "write songs", then it should be a passion if you are worried about being judged. When you are passionate about what you write, the idea of negativity and judgmental people dissipates because you are more keen to the meaning of your song and don't really care how it's misconstrued by others.
I would definitely start writing them like poetry first; most likely free verse to get the hang of releasing your inner emotions. If you want to start writing songs, there's many things you have to consider like rhyme scheme, syllabification, melody, genre, etc. so it won't always be easy. Some of these things are apparent in poetry, but there's less of a set standard…
Also, when it comes to songwriting, you have to understand who you want to read/hear this. If you're the only one, you're free to write whatever you want however you want, but if you want people to see your work, you have to approach it naturally for any eye/ear: it can't sound ridiculously complex or abstract that it wouldn't make sense to anyone else but you…
So this is a very personal song I wrote about myself. I guess this is about my loss of innocence - all my life, I've always been the kind of person who always tried to go out of my way for others to my own detriment. In the past year or so, I've learned that it is okay to put myself first because you can't really trust others to do that for you. So I guess this is kind of a mourning for my innocent and naive younger self, as I have begun evolving into someone who knows how to bite. It's also a bit about how people will find all these reasons to leave you when they've taken all they can, using your personality and your looks as reasons to abandon you. Really, they're just people who took what they could to make themselves feel better - and now I've kind of learned that there are people like that out there.
Born Bad
I started off sweet, just like sugar
Everybody loved how calm I seemed to be
So they liked what they saw, they started using
All the while they did, a fire was starting in me
My mother tried to save me
My father up and ran
If they ask you what’s with me
Be honest and just say that
I was born, born bad
They’ll try to cleanse me but they can’t
You just tell ‘em I was born, born bad
Too much dirt caked on my skin
I always give the best that I can
Still everybody leaves in the end
So I just tell ‘em I was born, born bad
They’ll all abandon me when they can
I picked at myself till I seemed perfect
When I looked in the mirror, I saw bland
But still there were things I was born with
Reasons people cited when they ran
I became something stronger
They couldn’t understand
So they wonder what’s up with me
All you have to say is
I was born, born bad
They’ll try to cleanse me but they can’t
You just tell ‘em I was born, born bad
Too much dirt caked on my skin
I always give the best that I can
Still everybody leaves in the end
So I just tell ‘em I was born, born bad
They’ll all abandon me when they can
I used to sacrifice myself for others
I built up other people by being weaker
Then one day, I took a look in the mirror
I didn’t like what I saw that day
I couldn’t keep living life that way
So I reached within my soul and I had it rearranged
They’ll say that I’m a monster
I’m devious and sly
They’re the ones who created me
I had to learn to survive
I was born, born good
They took everything that they could
You can tell ‘em I was born, born good
I lost my innocence to the world
I always gave the best that I can
Still everybody left in the end
So now I tell ‘em I was forged, forged bad
If you abandon me, go ahead
I don’t care, I don’t care
I don’t care anymore
And it won’t bother me
If you walk out the door
And I have to be brave
And I have to be strong
There’s no love in my heart
There’s no room anymore

You basically explained my whole life story it's why I love songwriting so much because you can build connections with other people who might be experiencing something similar to you in a healthy medium.

Your first post welcome! Where is the full of Field of Pignan? I wanna hear the rest of that song! Your songs sound pretty good from what I heard so far.
Ugh. If I was a singer I swear I'd be famous already. I know my songwriting is good but it's so hard pitching my songs to producers when I can't sing anyways I'm drunk and wrote a song about love like I always do. I sang it too so you can hear the melody! Lemme know what you think (the lyrics/melody not my voice, I KNOW I can't sing lmao)
Obviously it sounds bad but I think if I had an actual singer sing it it'd be good The song isn't done but it's a damn good start.
[Verse 1]
I’ve been waiting for this all my life (all my life)
I’ve been staring at you for a while (for a while)
I didn’t think that you would come through (you would come through)
But you know there’s something I see in you (I see in you)
[Verse 2]
When the stars begin to fall and the sun begins to fade
You know my love can wait (love can wait)
And if the moon disappears, your love is all it takes
Your love is all it takes to make the pain go away
[Chorus] x2
And in the silence of the night
I hear your voice in mine
It says to hold on tight (hold on tight)
And in the silence of the day
You take my breath away
Oh how you complete me (me, me, me)

Alright, I wanna prove you wrong. Can I send you a makeshift beat and a take on your melody? I think I hear what you hear… hopefully…

That's not a good reason to turn away from songwriting! You don't have to show anybody your work until you're comfortable.
One way you could get started is to make a list of a bunch of different brainstorming and writing techniques (just write whatever ones you think of even if you think they'll go badly) and try all of them. Then, whatever you like you can use, and now you have a list of techniques to help you when you're stuck. For example, one thing I do when I don't know what to write about is I put my thoughts on paper no matter what they are. Sometimes they're just like "I'm hungry" but other times they're deeper and cover topics like existentialism and complex. human relations.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, give yourself a lot to work with and then cut it down. Every writer is different and different things will help them, you just need to explore a little bit and see what works for you.

The full Fields of Pignan is on my youtube account.
This is a new song, about questioning if you've really gotten over someone you've been trying to get over. You think of them sometimes and it feels like you're missing them a bit, but you know it's better the way it is now without them in your life - but it still hurts.
So this song is called "And It Hurts" and I actually sang this one to keep the melody in my mind. So I'll post it here but don't judge my singing please, I'm not even on that Katy Perry level.
Once upon a time, I thought that I needed you
I was younger, there were stars in my eyes
I used to spend my time planning life with you
It was easy to allow myself to be blind
I crafted an illusion
It helped me sleep at night
Now you are out of my life
And it hurts
I act like it’s not there
They all said to ignore it
So it would disappear
But it hurts
It doesn’t pain me all the time
But I still feel the knife in my heart
And I wonder if I lied from the start
Because it still hurts
Once upon a time, you reeked of destiny
I thought you were made just for me
I used to dream of things that weren’t meant to be
But I thought they were written in the stars
I sold myself a story
It helped me dry my eyes
Now you are out of my life
And it hurts
I act like it’s not there
They all said to ignore it
So it would disappear
But it hurts
It doesn’t pain me all the time
But I still feel the knife in my heart
And I wonder if I lied from the start
Because it hurts
If I’m truly over it, should you still be in my veins?
If I’ve truly dealt with it, should your smile still remain?
I tried to cast you out of my dreams
I banned you from my heart
Now I find I am stuck at this part
And it hurts
I act like it’s not there
They all said to ignore it
So it would disappear
But it hurts
It doesn’t pain me all the time
But I still feel the knife in my heart
And I wonder if I lied from the start
Because it still hurts
Because it still hurts
Because you still hurt

I love that about songwriting too! It helps me feel not so alone when I can put on a song and the lyrics are exactly how I feel. It's like "I'm not the only person living in the midst of this, someone else knows how I feel and I'm going to be okay."
I played a gig the other night and afterwards a friend of mine and her parents approached me and asked who wrote one of my songs "Home" because they absolutely loved it and were so shocked it was me! Even though they knew I was a writer they thought it was so good that it must have been written by somebody who'd already been signed and groomed by a label
I'm currently working on another song and it's a pop song lol I've been rehearsing all day today like crazy cause I wanna record it already 🎤🎧
Just listened to your song, and the vocal on the chorus/hook is good. But there's like this huge discrepancy between that and the rap verses. It sounds like it wasn't mixed right at all. Also the tone of whoever is rapping doesn't really work for me personally.
The beat is dope af tho! Nothing game changing, but definitely something where it would be easy for me to see the potential in wanting to develop your sound if I worked for a label.
You sound JUST like Brendon Urie! Very similar tone and inflection in your voice. I feel like your music would be right up his alley too. You should try to submit some of your songs to his team!
I'm much more partial to these lyrics than Supernova, its not as contrived. The melody is so simple yet still resonates! The chorus is super catchy too.
But yeah this whole song gave me strong Panic! vibes. I'm really into it. The ending tho, not as much. I'd rework that if I were you.
I'd hella sign you out of anyone else in this thread if I had a label tho.
Hey guys! I was thinking of posting in this thread for a while and I finally got the courage to show what I got.
I recently released an mini-album/mixtape to get my name out there and I'm working the next one at the moment so that's pretty exciting.
If you wanna check out the EP/my voice:
Anyway here's a song I worked on a couple of months ago. Hope you like it
Up In The Air
Verse:
Here we go again,
The same things are being said,
And I don't want to believe that we are leaving each other,
We couldn't love another.
So now we just love others.
Hook:
It's so crazy,
How words can make you or break you.
Especially, when we are both about to break.
Chorus:
Feeling like floating up in the clouds.
We let this happen to ourselves.
We could be with each other.
Fighting against the world.
Just like in the movies,
But for now, it's just me.
Up in the air.
Verse:
The clock goes tick tock.
And I'm trying to lower shock.
I want this day to end.
Letting the rules bend.
I think I'm in love.
Bridge:
If I let you go, will you come back to me?
I don't want this relationship to end.
You always known how much I loved you so.
You have the key.
The key to my heart.
(Instrumental Build Up/Break)
Chorus:
Feeling like floating up in the clouds.
We let this happen to ourselves.
We could be with each other.
Fighting against the world.
Just like in the movies,
But for now, it's just me.
Up in the air.
Feeling like floating up in the clouds.
We let this happen to ourselves.
We could be with each other.
Fighting against the world.
Just like in the movies,
But for now, it's just me.
Up in the air.
Ok I wrote this song last Saturday and Nait did the vocals and productions. It sounds AMAZING and I thought I'd share it with you guys. Literally top 40 perfection ugh. The lyrics aren't finished but it was just something that came to me in 10 minutes during a drunken night so enjoy!
It says to hold on tight
And in the silence of the day
You take my breath away
Oh how you complete me
Everything is sung and produced by me, and everything is written by me except the cover of the Impossible Dream. I'm much more of a musician than a lyricist so please excuse some of the lyrical fails I can post the lyrics to any of the songs here if anyone wants them clarified and can't tell what they are.
I basically set into this project with the sole intent of wanting to create a larger, cohesive body of work and I think I achieved that goal. It's unpolished but I just wanted to get my ideas recorded since most of my recordings before this are from when I was 13 and could not sing/write/produce at all. Tell me if you're interested in anything else like what software I use, what mic I use etc.
