I am not a Belieber. Like many, I generally considered Justin Bieber to be scourge—a real-life Richie Rich with flashy pants and silly hair and awful tattoos of owls and tigers and castles. Like many, I experienced casual schadenfreude every time he was skewered on TMZ, somewhat amazed at how he could simultaneously repel shame while embracing the worst of privilege. Watching his exploits was like watching an endless succession of Vines starring the biggest dope I went to high school with (Timo, what’s good?) wiping his ass with $100 bills. I was comforted by the assumption that he would dissipate from culture as his fanbase grew up, went to college, and started to look back on their tween dreams with a healthy bewilderment.
