Can someone explain to me why radio and audiences moved away from the Babyface domination of the 90s? A lot of people say they just didn't age well but I'm not sure I buy that.
A lot of the Madonna stans overrate American Life to the high heavens but I tried getting into it and I just couldn't. I just couldn't enjoy it much at all.

It's just like every other trend. People tend to move on and embrace other genres. I think the bubblegum pop era + the Lilith Fair + Timbaland kinda put a damper on the Face domination. Babyface slayed in the '90s.
I'm reading Slant's review of Kelly C's album and the critic spends half the review complaining that she's not Taylor Swift.

Can't dance.
Can't act.
Has a weak videography.
Is an OK writer. Critics acting like self-deprecating lyrics such as "an indie record that's much cooler than mine" or "I can't make them stay" or "they tell me I'm insane" is Pulitzer Prize winning work.

Timbaland, and to a lesser extent Missy's sound kinda took over the music scene later in the 90's. And their hits began to take off. Also in the early 2000's R&B took on a different sound it was somewhat more pop sounding, and at times heavily Hip Hop leaning. Also Babyface's sound just became kinda dated.

Really ? I see most Madge stans hate American Life ... I mean the album is just an abomination
