I also remember Billboard's own analysts discussing "Blurred Lines" chances to make history as it approached ten weeks. Then Katy Perry released "Roar" and Lorde's "Royals" followed right behind Perry.
Admittedly, Swift's Hot 100 performance for "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space" were hindered by the massive sales of 1989, which is not an issue for "Uptown Funk." Still, either an unexpected sleeper hit or surprise smash could drop at any point to knock "Uptown Funk" out of #1.

Well it was easy to see Tay coming for Meg and Mark coming for Tay, so it wasn't realistic they would make it. Likewise, BB weren't wrong to prematurely say Robin was coming for history, though they didn't account for Katy's power which we knew was coming and a threat. I don't agree either AAtB/BS were as strong as UF. It's airplay alone makes it a much tougher track to topple, combined with the multiple 300k+ weeks that neither AAtB/BS got. Their steaming might be about the same.
You're right, we shouldn't count on a possible sleeper/debut smash coming. But I firmly believe at this point, until UF completely weakens - nothing close is really threatening for at least another month. Unless a fun./Gotye/Bauur unexpectedly comes about, it randomly starts crashing or a digitally strong pop girl drops I think we have a lot more time with UF!.
So exciting.
