To me the difference lies in intent and what message the artist is trying to communicate with their work; in Down by the Water, Polly's not trying to advocate, promote, or "glorify" infanticide. If she were, people would be completely within their right to be outraged by and dismissive of it.
And I think that's where the difference lies for most people. People think Lana's glorifying self-destructive behavior under the guise of feminism. I'm not sure I agree that that's what she's doing, but then I'm hardly educated on this topic.
You will laugh, but that was a question Polly was asked a LOT back then. She even made jokes about it when she said she was so sick of journalists asking her if she was a mad woman who killed her daughter. She was never even pregnant.
I am very familar with Polly. I grew up listening to her.
Ughh not gonna comment on her "opinion"... But why does every female artist has to be asked and have an opinion on feminism? The topic is really getting old.
Feminism is whatever you want it to be and however you see it. Why is it not okay to be a female and to not be a feminist? Some of these women talk about the subject like it's their lifelong career as celebrity feminist or something and yet they do things that are completely against the values of feminism. Such hypocrisy in this world
So because she doesn't approve of Lana's image/decisions/persona/whatever, that means she doesn't know what feminism is? Like, let the girl do/be what she wants.
She wasn't suggesting that Lana should kill herself, just that she could perhaps sound less silly when talking about a matter like suicide or feminism. Regardless of her "persona".

Kim bloody Gordon doesn't "need" to name-drop anyone. Don't be so stupid.
Lana doesn't need to write about **** that makes other people happy, that is seen as role model songwritting or that is feminist. She can do whatever she likes. Just because her name is out there doesn't mean she has to obey what is right. She is not regressing feminism, its not her fault people are stupid. Art isn't beautiful sometimes, and people should be able to write about the ugly side of things. Just like loving a man who abuses you, because you know, it's something that happens in real life.
i love sonic youth but what she said is absolutely ridiculous
being a woman/feminist doesnt mean acting like other women want/expect u too
& its not like she even knows lana
so to say something like this just makes her sound angry
& she doesnt have much room to talk about lana's kurdt comment cos she basically sold him out & helped make a movie that made him look like some pathetic psychotic shell of a person when she was supposed to be his friend so imo she can **** off
I think I get it though. LDR's image is very polarizing, and I feel like its worn thin after this last album. Her interviews definitely didn't endear her to anyone besides her stans. I feel like I would understand her far more if she was trying to make some sort of underlying statement with this~broken lolita thing, but her interviews have kind of proved there's no real deeper meaning under the surface, it's just an image that she likes (which I guess is ok, but disapointing).
I love when some of these "real feminists" always tell other women what is right and what is wrong, what they should do and what they shouldn't and always ending their statements with some passive-aggressive ott suggestions.
