She did do a little bit of promo, but the truth of the matter is that BoA's popularity is diminished with the public.

BoA's popularity in Japan just isn't what it used to be. Though she isn't the only one.
Japan seems to be growing tired of all these Avex divas, especially looking @ the sales of Ayumi Hamasaki & Koda Kumi's latest albums.

I'm so thankful for the comeback Namie Amuro has been able to make.
Her latest single "WILD/Dr." did good considering the circumstances, I just hope her next studio album doesn't suffer the decline in sales that Ayu & Kuu are currently going under.

Maybe BoA can have a Namie Amuro-like comeback in Japan but it doesn't seem likely at this point :-/

Female artists just don't do as well in Japan because everyone loves JE boybands. The only exception is Utada Hikaru---that bitch's album sales have been consistent, and I don't count the English album because it did well despite the lack of promo and hype.

^Yea, Utada is the only female artist that has really been able to stay consistant in terms of album sales for each album. I'm intrested to see how her next japanese album will fair.

And I really don't get Japan's obsession with all them boybands

Its always been musically Utada and Ayumi Hamasaki in-terms of influence on pop culture & sh!t (her #1 streak is very impressive aswell) but rite now it's clear that Namie is the head b!tch.

Utada Hikaru has continued to sell after all these years, but you definitely don't see her in the media or as some huge style icon like BoA, Namie, Ayu, and Kuu. Utada sells more, but you see a lot of other girls on television and such. They may not sell as many albums, but they're popular in the media. Does that make sense?

As for Namie, we still have to wait and see. Yeah, her "Best" album sold, but I want to see how well she goes from here to her new studio album. I'd say she and Hikki are coming up on par.

They use that "biggest artist in Asia" sh!t cause she's had success and popularity in two Asian countries (Japan & Korea).

BoA @ her highest point in Japan couldn't even touch the sales of Namie, Ayu, & Utada in thier prime. Hell, Koda Kumi too.

^She doesn't have a current japanese single there however "Come Back to Me" is doing very well in-terms of airplay there.

Four Things:

(1) IMO, BoA did not sell out in Korea. Her position is the same as Natasha Bedingfield's in the UK. She came out it in Korea/Japan at the same time. She was more successful in Japan in a market with room to grow. Why wouldn't she go there?

(2) Ayumi Hamasaki is not necessarily the top pop culture icon. It's like comparing Madonna and Mariah Carey. Utada has had way more accolades in music. Honestly, Ayumi only has the sales that she does because she's released double the amount of singles and albums.

(3) LMAO. Namie was NEVER the headbitch. BoA had already passed Namie in popularity and sales. Namie Amuro doesn't even come close to Ayumi or Utada and she had nothing on Koda Kumi for a while. I would say she's Top 5, but I wouldn't put her Top 3.

(4) Although BoA has never had overwhelmingly huge sales, she's almost dwarfed the others in endorsement deals. Her presence is still significant in the pop culture there.

When Namie first came out as a solo artist in Japan in the mid/late 1990's she was the head b!tch.
They even dubbed her as the queen of Japanese pop music.
Aside from music she also influenced pop culture, they even called it the "Amuraa" craze. Do you know how many fashion trends Namie started?

Namie is also the longest surviving japanese pop artist. To say that BoA has already passed Namie in popularity and sales is absolutely ridiculous. Where are you getting your facts?

Namie's highest selling album in Japan has sold over 3 million while BoA's highest selling album has sold over 1 million.

Plus Namie's single "Can You Celebrate" remains the highest selling physical single from a female artist selling over 2 million and she's even had some singles sell a little over 1 million.
BoA has NEVER had a million selling single, not to mention she only has one #1 single in Japan while Namie has 11.

Namie had a decline in sales after she took breaks after giving birth to her son plus the death of her mother but was able to slowly rebuild her career with 2005's 'Queen of Hip Pop' album and 2007's 'Play'.

But it was last years 60s70s80s & 'BEST FICTION' that really put her back on top.

And Koda Kumi had some amazing sales especially during Namie's falling out but she was never as popular as Namie in her prime and could never be called an "icon" as Namie can today.

^I get your point, but again, Namie Amuro was NEVER headbitch. She might have been relevant when there was no competition back in like 1997 or something, but when it came time to defend her "title," she didn't. I agree that Namie Amuro is Top 5, but again, after her declines, I just feel like BoA is just more popular. She is like Jessica Simpson sales-wise. Her singles and album sales have fallen, but that isn't why she's big anymore (which is sad, because she's sooo talented). For example, whenever I talk to sales clerks about what is selling (I'm a business major), they tell me that people come in to buy Utada Hikaru, Ayumi Hamasaki, BoA, and Nami Tamaki albums. They almost always have a limited stock of Namie Amuro. Now, while I agree that she's making some sort of a comeback, I just don't think she can touch Utada and Ayu in sales/popularity. The third position might be for her for past reasoning, but she's getting up there. I honestly think she does well because she's a bracket of her own. Utada, Ayu, and BoA are not R&B singers. It's like trying to prove that Beyonce is better than Britney Spears.

The fact is Namie wasn't just relevent in the 90's she was HEADBITCH then Ayumi came along and stole her thunder.

Obviously during Namie's decline BoA and others became more popular than her but I'm talkin about rite now.
Namie didn't just make some sort of comeback she made a HUGE comeback.
60s70s80s was her first #1 single in 10 years and 'BEST FICTION' was the highest selling female album in Japan in 2008 (beating out Ayu's & Utada's releases from last year) #2 highest selling of '08 plus she had the 3rd biggest opening for a female artist worldwide (behind Madonna & Britney).
Not to mention 60s70s80s outsold Ayumi's "Mirrorcle World" so she did infact top Ayumi & Utada interms of sales last year & she def. regained her popularity once again.
Looking @ the sales of Ayu's latest studio album 'NEXT LEVEL' it's obvious she's loosing popularity. Now we just have to wait and see the sales of Utada's next japanese album and Namie's next studio album to really determine who's on top.
