Beyoncé is just stubborn and passive aggressive is all. Beyoncé and Lady Gaga are both stubborn, but in different ways. Beyoncé is going to do the exact opposite of what her label says, always. Her label said, "Release 'End of Time' as the first single," she released "Run The World (Girls)." Beyoncé thinks just because she was right and her label was wrong during the "Dangerously In Love" era, that she's always right, and the label is always wrong. So she's not going to listen to logic when it comes to selling hit singles anymore. It's most likely going to be her downfall. Rihanna will probably outlast and surpass her, the same way Katy Perry outlasted and surpassed Lady Gaga. Very much a tortoise and the hare situation, in both cases.

Not an AOTY WIN, though. The way she has marketed this album is a major reason why it's so acclaimed. It gave another facet to her artistry.


Lol @ Rihanna outlasting Beyonce - a near-20 year veteran. Singles do not make legacies. Hence why Paula Abdul is LONG forgotten, while people such as Bob Marley, James Brown, etc. have gone on to have far bigger legacies. Beyonce is basically the closest thing we have to a legend in 2015.

Part of it is definitely her vs the label. But that's always been about what KIND of music to make and release. There's never really been a disconnect with her promoting of said music. In fact, she loves to perform so it's always been in her favor.

Urban radio played the daylights outta Beys album. Every single song went #1, including 7:11 which is #1 right now.

I think pop radio should've played DIL more but nothing else was gonna go top 10. These songs had more than enough exposure but iTunes buyers said no.

Poor XO. If she'd held off releasing it until after DIL in like April or May it could've been a nice summer smash.

But also, nothing besides XO, PH & DIL had pop appeal. We all know pop radio messed up with DIL & how it entirely overshadowed XO's existence, but the one remaining album track with pop appeal was universally regarded as the worst song on the album, lol. So yeah, after that she was done on that format for the era.

Blow never had a chance so I'm not sure why that one was nearly the lead single. Way too raunchy and also kind of boring after repeated listens.

Where are you during my "Should Beyoncé stop trying to appeal to blacks?" threads trying to reason for her to get back to releasing hit singles. I'm a one-man army out there. You seem like the only one that shares the same views: that Beyoncé needs hits singles (and to start appealing more to the whites like during the "Dangerously In Love" and "B'Day" eras).

Mine never had a chance on pop, but honestly it's a disgrace she never released it to urban/rhythmic. Would've smashed beyond belief on those formats w/ a proper, shorter radio edit.

It was getting a lot of early airplay when the album first dropped.
