Crying at the write-ups. When will the soul-less critics ?
I didn't listen to Dierks Bentley's album but the rest of the Top 5 are all albums I liked or even loved. Especially Azealia's, that happens to be in the same place I put it on my list
The diversity throughout your entire Best of 2014 is really fantastic
Like, who else could rank BWET and Riser as their top two albums of 2014? Flawless,
You put a lot of effort into your reviews, and they were all a pleasure to read!
I'm going to give Ultraviolence another try, and hopefully get to Coldplay & Mariah
I've been meaning to get to Jhené, St. Vincent, and Jessie Ware too
The only problem with checking out older music is that new music keeps coming out
Luckily, your Best of 2014 has something for everyone, so thank you very much for all of the recommendations!
She was so close Maybe after the next [strike]hopefully not delayed[/stike]album

Flying Lotus is great and You're Dead! is an impressive album.
Azealia delivered for real. I remember following her twitter back in 2012 or whenever the album was supposed to drop and being so angry at her for not even acknowledging the delay. Little did I know how lon git would take.

What an amazing countdown, mate.
The more I listen to Azealia's album, the more I'm realising how good it really is. All the pieces are starting to come together, even the album cover is seemingly more powerful now. The ballerina pose is actually a brilliant way to present the album as brutal, in the most stereotypically feminine sense. It takes so much strength to affectively pull off that pose.
I'm not surprised about Coldplay, given your admiration for them. I am surprised about Mariah, though! I never listened to her album, but I agree, "#Beautiful" lives up to its name. It was actually somewhat of a hit over here, which was so unexpected, but it definitely deserved to!
You really have the most amazing taste, well done! Excited to discover some new jams from you this year.
I never thought about the cover that way. Yet again, you made me realize something I had not thought of. #lycheepower
Azealia's album is a grower, which is a very scary thing. It really feels like there's a lot more depth to the album. I especially love how cosmopolitan, yet cohesive it is. Just like New York (so I hear)
I loved #Beautiful and really got into Mariah. The album was great.
Thanks for the compliment! Likewise. I've already gotten some good stuff from you though.

Why would I be kidding about the upcoming masterpiece Meow The Jewels
I agree that's what makes Coldplay's album so heartbreaking. I get it now
Of course Dierks was number 1. It is objectively the best thing to come of last year.

Azealia #2, damnit. Mimi her best album in god knows when.
Mariah and Azealia each offered up gold, even if their albums didn't go that. I listen to a little bit of everything though, what can I say.
I love Azealia's album so much. How is she so good?

Azealia Her album was alright, a tad too experimental for me but I assure that means it's even more suitable for you. Don't really care for anything else in the top 10.
Yes! Tinashe's album is great! Glad to hear that you bought it. And that you buy your music too
I loved Azealia's album. I like artists that kind of push for something, you know? That's not really a dig at anybody. I like pretty much everything, I just find it easy to admire when someone aims for more.

Your highlights for both, especially BWET, make me sad tho.
Let me get into this Dierks character.
Great, diverse list! Hoping the new year exposes you to even more good music that might've slipped under my radar.
Mimi and Azealia delivered (finally)
The tracks I posted aren't really highlights per se. But pretty much just the first songs I posted because they popped up first and I was sleepy when I made the list. But, pretty much all the songs on both are great so I didn't have a problem with it.
Oh and Dierks, his lyrics, they just get you. The sound too , I don't know, he really won me over.

Amazing Ghost Stories write-up! I love when that happens, when you listen to an album at first and you are like “eh,” but then after repeated listens it just “clicks.” I like how you described that process, and I like you tying the themes from the record into the song titles. Well done. I love that album, as well! I am such a slacker for not listening to the Flying Lotus album yet. I love his work, and good job singling out Thundercat! He is amazing!! I also like you talking about the album artwork, as while I typically buy digital nowadays (though I tend to buy 3-4 CD’s a year, usually from indie record shops or online preorders from the record label, like Merge Records), but i’m glad that Flying Lotus put the effort into the packaging! I haven’t listened to the Mariah and AB albums yet, though your write-ups are intriguing. And Dierks’ Riser at #1! What a great choice! It couldn’t make my own countdown, but I really loved it, and I love how it just connected with you this year. Dierks really doesn’t get enough credit, even on his lesser albums he still has strong songs (I thought Home was OK, but there’s some great songs on there, like the title track and “When You Gonna Come Around” with Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild). It’s more outright country/bluegrass, but have you heard Up on the Ridge? It is really amazing, and there’s even a cover of “Pride” (In the Name of Love) on it, so your talk of U2 really does fit haha! Wonderful #1!
I just want to say, while I wasn’t here at the beginning, I want to complement your year-end. I’ve been posting on these year-end forums since they began as an off-shoot of the Your Top Ten forum 11-12 years ago, and yours is one of the best I have ever come across. Strong variety of music, passionate write-ups, creative pics of the artwork/packaging, no easy snark, it was a complete pleasure to read through. And this was your first year! Great job, and I look forward to next year’s edition!
Thank you sir! I can tell you that I really look forward to your comments/reading your best of/stealing some music for future listening.
You know, I'm not going to lie about Ghost Stories. I just wasn't feeling it at first. Partially, that may be because I live in California and it was just too sunny and warm for Ghost Stories in the spring. Weather really helps whether or not I feel an album. It was a grower though.
And Thundercat. He's the best, I have his first album and I love his first album. I was never too big on the cartoon, and I'm kind of allergic to cats, but Thundercat is on another astral plane
Sometimes, I love the physical releases. If I can, I'll order form the label too or Amazon, or Amoeba, and get stuff for super cheap. Other times, I'll download music from my public library and their Freegal subscription. It's all such a rich tapestry that has yielded my music collection.
Riser just clicked, it felt really mature, and real in a way that no other album really did this year. I love that you mentioned Up On A Ridge, I love that album and how Dierks really be comfortable with a lot of different styles. He even worked with the Punch Brothers (on Pride), I mean, that's just tailor made for me.
Thanks for the compliment too on my Best Of. It means a lot, especially from you. I love your best of. I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant Actually, not quite that much, but it's been the best. It's honestly been a lot of fun and I can say that It's just been a pleasure going around and commenting on everyone's and seeing what they're listening to and just talking about music.
And thank you for the perscription Dr.

All those albums are just *unintelligible sobbing

Thanks! I loved our list also. And your number one!
I didn't even really think about how random BWET and Riser are back to back
Those are are great artists to get into, and I feel your stuggle. It's always a balancing act. Like do you go back and listen to old stuff or discover new stuff. It's hard. I appreciate your comments. Thanks again.
You may have noticed a couple musicians in my OP that haven't made an appearance on this Best Of. That was the first list I came up with, my least favorite artist list. Every musician there was annoying, inescapably annoying, or just plain unlikeable to me through the course of the year, and I can honestly say that I'm not a big fan of any of them. I'd hate to bring negativity here, but to give everyone a more well-rounded look at things, and because a guy needs to get this off his chest.
Sia
Sia assaulted with her music on two fronts this year: as a solo artist and as a songwriter. I don't quite recall if she wrote any hits for other artists that charted this year, but her work on the 2013 pop albums held over through this year. I really do believe that her songswriting is weak and she relies on shaky metaphors, and predictable song structure for the majority of her music. Just some examples: 1) Diamonds - Shine bright like a Diaaaamond, 2) Perfume - I put on my Perfuuuuume, I want it all over youuuuuu, I want to mark my territorih, 3) IIIIIIIIIIIIIII'mm gonna swiiiiiiiing on a Chandelieeeeeeeeeeerr, 4) Pretty Hurts - Preeeeeeeeeeettyyyyyyyyy Huuuuuuurrrttts. She also just seems to be getting by on quirk, the "not showing her face" thing got pretty tiring through the course of the year. It works for Thomas Pynchon because he's a writer, but a pop songwriter cannot have it both ways, part of the job is showing your face; it just felt gimmicky for me, especially since she was on The Voice as Christina Aguilera's mentor. None of that is mentioning the voice that she uses in her own music. She yells almost every chance she gets to the point that it's near screeching and she does not enunciate clearly, and that patois that she affects on some of her songs was not there before Diamonds. I tried my best to ignore her this year, which you think would be easy with her avoiding the spotlight; it wasn't easy.
Ed Sheeran
I don't really know why I dislike this guy as much as I do. There's just something about him I don't like. I have yet to like one of his songs (besides Everything Has Changed, but that's in spite of him, not because). If I had to guess why I dislike him so much, it's because his songs (singles, I guess since I haven't heard anything else) feel to me like they're so carefully made to be "good."
What I mean by that, is that it seems like he goes out of his way to add elements to his music and image to give them the illusion of quality. Take "The A-Team" for example, I really dislike the song; but it just seems constructed to scream critical bait: the soft melody, the delicate vocals, the bummer of a story about an addict, it just comes across as Ed screaming: "look how sensitive I am! Look at how artistic my music is!" It just all feels very calculated to cover up an otherwise bland songwriter. "Sing" is also terrible. It just felt like he went to Pharrell because he was the hippest producer at the moment and Ed wanted to be with it, so he threw in some quirky muppets, a Justin TImberlake impersonation and called it a day. Worst of all is "Thinking Of You" but I'd rather not think of it so I'm going to move on.
03. FKA Twigs
Sometimes you don't like an artist, or song, at first and it slowly grows on you and becomes a favorite; other times you start out liking an artist, and you slowly and subtly come around to disliking them. FKA Twigs is a strange case for me, I started out liking her a lot, but I burned out on her quickly. I guess everything she does just feels more superfluous and unnecessary and I'm a rather straight-forward and practical guy. I just came around to thinking that she was almost all style and no substance and that everything about her is extra. I like to find meaning to my music, I like it to say something, and I really don't get that from her. So much of her music just feels produced to the point that it sounds interesting, but offers little else. I spent a lot of time listening to LP1, as I did most these artists, and I just have to wonder if there was really ever anything there in the first place; I mean, the music sounds dark and mysterious, but there really doesn't seem to be anything there except the promise of mystery. Case in point, that album cover, I've spent hours thinking about what it could represent, but it just doesn't speak to me besides implying that she ate something she was allergic to. I don't get it. It doesn't make me feel anything and that should be the point of art.
02. Tove Lo
There was no artist that I found as repugnant as this one. She takes unlike-ability to new heights. Hear me out on this one please. She makes catchy pop music sure, that's fine, I have nothing against that; I'm here afterall. But should she be making catchy pop music? Her song Habits (Stay High) was a big hit, but should it have been a big hit? The song is about her staying high all the time because she's miserable after a break-up. She wallows in her own bad habits and shows no desire at growth and overcoming her misery, and then she goes and sets it to Top 40 friendly music with glossy production that's ensured to have as much cross-genre appeal as possible? What's the goal there? To get other people to sing along with your misery? It's one of the most egregious cases of sonic dissonance I have ever heard and I'm left with two options: 1) She has a terrible grasp of how to contextualize her music or 2) she's a miserable person who wants everyone to sing along with her. Her other songs aren't really any better. She has this general unlikeable presence and the most cringe-worthy lyrics. "That line about ****ing for life" just comes across as so extra and unnecessary, thrown in her music to add some kind of edge I fundamentally disagree with her message and her presence as an artist.
Madonna
I've never liked Madonna. She may not have officially released too much in 2014, but she was everywhere doing everything but releasing music. But is it really that big of a deal?
The way I see it, anybody is entitled to act however they want, and as an artist, she has every right to release whatever style music she wants. I also have every right to criticize her for her antics and music. As I get older, I've learned that we take our experiences and grow from them. We gain wisdom and grow as people. We do not take on the personality development of Benjamin Button. She just seems to be acting more juvenile as time goes on. I'm not saying she needs to retire, I love that she's making music and inspires people. I just do not like her personality or her music, and that's really all it comes down to.
Edit: Oops. I forgot Sam Smith who I meant to put here. Oh well.

If I don't completely run out of time, I'm really going to try and put up a best of the decade so far list. Nothing too fancy.
Oop, poor Sia, Ed and Tove Lo I like all 3 of them.
Sia's good, a tad overrated but still nice. Ed is also significantly overrated but I can't hate him (outside of the Games section.) Tove Lo has the amazing album to back herself up so she definitely deserved to smash.
Hope you can do that list. Should be very interesting.
I purposely didn't listen to Sia's album because of her antics this year.
I mean, performing everywhere turned away from the audience, or with a paper bag on her head or whatever?
That's not artistry, that's just annoying, pretentious behavior,
Maybe I can listen to Sia's album someday, but not anytime soon. Especially not after she shaded Avril Lavigne as well
Sia is a damn good songwriter though, I like a lot of songs that she's written.
I like Ed Sheeran as a songwriter too, I think The A Team is one of his best songs, but I don't like Thinking Out Loud and I don't understand why it's smashing so effortlessly
Quote:

I love Tove Lo I just really connect with the message of that song and her style of writing overall; loss is a hard thing to write about and I think Tove captured that hopeless, lost feeling perfectly. I think she's brave for writing something like that, and I haven't found a single flaw in her discography (so far) either. I agree that her lyrics can be off-putting, but that's what I like about them. They're meant to shock and make some people uncomfortable; but I do think she's genuine. As far as I know, she's written all of her songs (and some songs for other artists, like "Something New" by Girls Aloud and "Love Me Like You Do" by Ellie Goulding; also songs for Ella Eyre, Cher Lloyd, and Lea Michele).
EDIT: I just thought of this comparison,
Habits (Stay High) is kinda like Bourbon In Kentucky,
Both have lyrics that promote destructive ways to get over someone
Habits (Stay High)
You're gone and I gotta stay
High all the time
To keep you off my mind...
Spend my days locked in a haze
Trying to forget you babe
I fall back down
vs.
Bourbon In Kentucky
But there ain't enough
Bourbon in Kentucky
For me to forget you
No there ain't enough
Bottles I could drink
To make 'em feel as empty as I do
Quote:
She just seems to be acting more juvenile as time goes on.
I agree, but Give Me All Your Luvin was my #17 song of 2012, so
Girl Gone Wild and Masterpiece charted on my Top 100 that year, too
I actually liked her MDNA album. I'm not sure how I feel about Rebel Heart yet, but I do feel she's basically maturing in reverse. At least in Madonna's case, she's choosing the wrong singles and the wrong way to promote.
"Masterpiece," "I ****ed Up," and "Falling Free" are examples of good songwriting on Madonna's last album.
Masterpiece is actually pretty nice, imo:
If you were the Mona Lisa
You'd be hanging in the Louvre
Everyone would come to see you
You'd be impossible to move
It seems to me is what you are
A rare and priceless work of art
Stay behind your velvet rope
But I will not renounce all hope
And I'm right by your side
Like a thief in the night
I stand in front of a masterpiece
And I can't tell you why
It hurts so much
To be in love with the masterpiece
Cause after all
Nothing's indestructible
that album cover, I've spent hours thinking about what it could represent, but it just doesn't speak to me besides implying that she ate something she was allergic to.
Well, 2014 was a slow year, musically. Nobody really turned in their best work. But, since we've already had 5 years, that means we're mid-way through the decade. The Best song of the Decade....
Sufjan Stevens - Impossible Soul
It's not so much as a song as an adventure. It's 25 minutes long, but the highlight of Sufjan's incredible 2010 album 'The Age Of Adz.' For awhile, this was one of my most played songs which says something about how captivating this one is. It's truly a desert island song, meaning if I could only have one song for the rest of my life, it would be this one.
It's the sound of an artist, going completely unhinged, throwing all nothings of pop structure, genres, restraint, and convention out the window as he has a meltdown for 20 minutes. As I said, it's an adventure, as the song begins, you're greeted with a slow bleeping, like a lighthouse beckoning you at sea. It morphs into several different songs along the way, but it's all of one piece. It breezes by, you listen as almost every sound and style zips past. It's a monumental song. The creation of a true artist. Brilliance on record.

Let's see the sh!t you don't like. I actually don't like that sh!tty song mainly of Chief Keef
So Amaloner is not the only one that has a fear of Sia. Attacking her songwriting skills. Clever. Her not showing face has me even want to take a look at it more. Don't you f**k with Ed like that. I guess he's the singer that you have been thinking of. You're saying Ed is taking the easy route to sound good and autheic with the way he does music, but it's all a trap since it's nothing speical and a facade. I only heard Two Weeks and I liked so can't judge any futher. Tove Lo is our misery?! I never liked Madonna and her music so it's good she is here, but of course, you're going get hated on for this, but you know that. Good write-ups on those.
Mid-decade: For many songs, so little time. Gotta take a took. Adele is just wonderful, nothing fancy just pure simplicity music to be in awe at, Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) better than most pop gurls ATRL worships, Better Dig Two is so good, like that TBB/Santi song, XO is pop wonderland, Countdown this countdown, Shutterbug is great, Calle 13 and Camila nice, I'm blown away because there's was something in the (Holy) water. A body party with CiCi-I;m there! But Brezzy says I couldn't get in. F**k You! Coldplay, what a song Touch is, I'm up all night to get lucky, Coming Home is wonderful esp. Skylar's voice, I'm latching onto Latch, Hold on We're Taking Care The Motto in 5AM because my Girls love Queen Bee. Em is the Rap God, Gorillaz are always good, Take Me to Life, Radioactive was my #1 last year, Janelle sounds wonderful in Cold War, having fun with the Tightrope while slowing down to have a Prime Time! Mirrors is the best out of the JT songs. Kanye has all that power to beg y'all for Mercy in Paris because he's the motherf**kin' monster of all of the lights. Yup! Only Nicki matters in Monster. The best thing she's done ever. I just like all the West songs. My teenage dream was always always to f**k naked Katy Perry and the California Gurls. Bitch, don't kill King Kendrick's vibe. Swimming Pool (Drank) is anything you wanted to be. Like all the Gaga songs except Marry the Night.
M.I.A, Midnight City is the f**King best, #Beautiful, Adorn is one of the best R&B songs out there recently-Pure music sex. Roman's Revenge is the best, but I'm looking ass and have Beez in the trap. Take a Walk is my fav song to take a walk and get my mind out of things, Give Me Smooth Sailing, Radiohead, We Pour Loveeeeeee, Dancing on My own, Soldier of Love-so good, Empire, Losing You is just amazing, Safe & Red Again, Tinashe's on fire! Rack City, bitch, Giving Up The Gun or you're Diane Young,
hit me with that Lotus FLower Bomb and 2chainz ain't different. Hearing parts of Impossible Soul and it's an interesting song.
