To imply she needed Kanye and Paul is to imply there was fear and/or doubt that she wouldn't be successful. Also Rihanna is arguably still in her prime which isn't the case for Paul and Kanye. If anything she had more to lose by teaming up with them both.

And Umbrella was the song that turned her into one of the main girls.

If she wanted something different she could've just sung Kanye's part herself and leave Paul in the producer credits. Making them both main artists was clearly a desperate move. So yes there was a lot of fear, probably because the other material she has recorded so far is garbage.
