Are we pretending it's the 1990s?

For those of us that know nothing about the Japanese music industry, can we get an answer as to whether the OP is being sarcastic or not?

He's not. It didn't really bomb, but it's quite a decline for them.
1830m (2012): 870,621 1st week
Tsugi no Ashiato (2014): 961,531 1st week
This one will most likely not cross 1 million on the long run.

No handshake contests or other gimmicks to help them along this time?

Omg no wonder it sold so much, they have so many members. They probably don't even have any fans, hence the sharp day-to-day drop, it's just all their family members buying copies on release day

I'll never understand how they're so successful. It's like a goddamn chorus when they're all performing together.

Wait, how have their albums had these massive first weeks but barely passed 1M in total sales? The Japanese market is so strange to me. Like, is the ENTIRE consumer base of each of these albums depleted in one day?
