You realize absent from radio =/= from public conscious? The difference is Rihanna needs radio to stay competitive, Beyoncé doesn't (at least not to the same extent).
This tells us something about their respective careers. Skating by on being easy to digest is easy when some of your biggest competitors are actually taking real & legitimate risks musically, artistically, and pushing the art of performance, business, or any other avenue much further than you.
But it eventually catches up to you. 7 albums in and what's Rih trying to say? While "Flawless" was blaring in every car & club in the hood, it was being hashtagged on social media, and discussed relentlessly around the world. And every round table panel dissecting the message would explode with passionate arguments & opinions about Beyoncé's feminism, marriage, music, entrepreneurship, etc.
So while Bey is absent from the charts (by her own volition), Rihanna is absent from our minds and homes in a much more critical way.
All those hits and for what? She's not richer, she's not more revered, she doesn't draw a larger audience (touring or ratings wise), she's not more acclaimed, she's not more famous, she's not more influential... So then what?
I find it funny how the Navy celebrates single success as THE ends to the means. Like there's nothing more important beyond that. But slé!
