05. Heavy Metal And Reflective- Azealia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste (it actually happened!!!!)







Well, I reviewed this one for atrl critic when it dropped and still feel the same way. So here it is...

The single itself is a head rush of a song, two minutes thirty-six seconds of unrelenting fire. The cool yet edgy glide of earlier releases like 212 (her house inflicted break-out) and Esta Noche is replaced by an unrelenting pulsating monster of a track that goes even harder than the primal scream of her last lead single, Yung Rapunxel. The lyrics are mostly about how hard Azealia can go, and that message is hammered in through the music and Azealia’s flow. Heavy Metal And Reflective gives no time to stop and reflect on the song, it keeps going, threatening to leave anyone who can’t keep up behind; there is no dynamic to her flow, little chorus to grasp onto, only a slight decrease in tempo around the 1:50 mark that quickly picks back up just as your head stops spinning fast enough to begin to think about taking a breath. Azealia’s serious. Heavy Metal And Reflective shows she hasn’t lost it, she’s coming harder than ever. The track is scary, not because of the music or theme, it’s scary because it still sounds like she’s holding back.

"Days In The East," is possibly about Rihanna (and by possibly, I mean it probably is) and a line from "Stay" floats by through the murk in this track; a Rihanna song this is not. This is Drake at his most Drakeish. It's 6 minutes long and aimless, he only has himself and some gauzy electronics pulsating around himself, but he does some of the best storytelling of the year on this one. Everyline hits like a ton of bricks and he even manages to make "Remember one night I went to Erykah Badu house, she made tea for me / We talked about love and what life could really be for me / She said when that **** is real, you just know," life the most intense life changing experience he has ever been through. It's an amazing track, and he just gave it away on an off year.

03. Another's Arms - Coldplay - Ghost Stories








I didn't like most of Ghost Stories at first, it's a very subtle album and takes some time to unravel. This one took awhile to sneak up on me, but it hit like a ton of bricks when it did. Coldplay as a and, aren't Radiohead, they don't want to be bummers, they're too polite for that, but that doesn't stop "Another's Arms" from being completely devastating. "Late night watching TV / Used to be you here beside me / Used to be your arms around me / Your body on my body," is so real a situation that it completely humanizes the guy who once sang "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall." And none of that is mentioning the background music. the bass doesn't just drop, it feels like the world falls out from beneath you, and you're left floating through empty space. It's Coldplay's most crushing, and finest, moments

Favorite 2014 Songs (02)

02. Out Of The Woods - Taylor Swift - 1989








It's a monster of a song. After "Shake It Off" I was a bit nervous for Taylor. I love her, but "Shake It Off" just barely managed to seem to work, I had no idea what an album of "Shake It Off" would be like. Luckily, I was hating myself for ever doubting her as soon as I heard "Out Of The Woods." It keeps her trademark story telling, but changes her sound completely. A story of overcoming a snowmobiling incident or a relationship, it's a towering gleaming song that is among the best she's ever done. I was impressed then, and have been playing it non-stop ever since. It honestly keeps getting better. She can do it all.

Favorite 2014 Song

01. I Hold On - Dierks Bentley - Riser








It's a country song. But it's so much better than a country song. I liked country, but never really got into it in a big way until this year. I occasionally preview the songs charting on iTunes just to see what's new and I checked this one and immediately fell in love. It's so sleek and modern, almost as if classic U2 took a turn into the country and matured as a band there. The lyrics, the vocal performance, the whole track is so tight and crisp. It's such a refreshing change of pace for music, instead of praising material possessions, Dierks sings of holding onto things for their intrinsic value, but makes it sound like the most important thing in the world. It's about sticking to your beliefs and ideals because that's all you really have to keep you going strong in life. It was a chance find, but it made my year. This made me appreciate what country music can do. I've been playing it constantly since. Song of the year right here. A classic in my book.

“Bourbon in Kentucky” really is a terrific song. I was similarly sad that the song didn’t do well, as I think it’s one of his finest. A lot of emotion, and I know a lot of Riser was influenced by the death of his father, so you could read some of that into the song, as well. 100% with you on Nicki and “Looking Ass.” So good. I like both Drake songs, and “Another’s Arms”! With you on Ghost Stories, and nice job highlighting “Another’s Arms,” an underrated highlight from the album. Love “Out of the Woods.” And what a great choice for #1! That’s really cool how you got into country this year, and I also like Dierks a lot. I like how on all of the Riser singles (the two you charted, and “Drunk on a Plane”) there’s always that melancholy hanging over it. “I Hold On” is a strong song, and a very worthy #1 song of 2014.

Great stuff, and i’m looking forward to the rest of your albums list!

The way I see it on Monday you're still optimistic right? The week could still go your way and you have some weekend afterglow. Then Tuesday hits and you realize that you still have the whole week to go.

Drake's probably the best A&R guy Oh well, about Makonnen, he can get caught in the rain.

You like Dierks too? He's so good, I've been missing out. I've heard of him before, but just decided to check him out. So glad I did.

I did hear about his father's influence on the album, you're right, it does add another dimension to everything.

I have a couple curveball's on my album list which is to come. So we're not out of the woods yet. I'm looking forward to your album list, holy cow, so many of the albums I love were on it.
