I rated each album out of 10 and ordered them accordingly. All of them were over 5.

I don't think that description fits the whole album. I mean the lyrics to MTJF are not profound, but I find the sustained rhyming really cute and love the melody in the chorus. And while there are a few joke songs, others are serious and have stronger lyrics (Candy Bling, Languishing, Betcha Gon' Know, H.A.T.E.U. of course). And I liked the packaging with the throwback photos The title is weird since I agree that the album isn't exactly a memoir, but that's my only major problem with it.

And It's A Wrap, The Impossible, and IWTKWLI could be called filler, but that's it

1. The production is so tacky, almost all instrumentals sound so artificial and tinny and the beats, throughout the entire album, are poor synthesized hand claps. And that's why the record aged very badly, at least for me, I think it sounds so dated.

2. The songwriting is so kitschy. I know she had just fallen in love when she worked on Memoirs and I think some of those bubbly lyrics (e.g. Ribbons) were actually very sweet. But for the most part the lyrics are trashy. I hardly can believe that the person who wrote masterpieces like The Roof or Outside is the same that wrote those horrid rhymes in More Than Just Friends. The most bitter song for me is Angels Cry because I love, love, love, love the melody but I can't enjoy the song because of that chorus. How can she, who doesn't like Hero because she considers it to be somewhat corny, write a line like, "When you and I said goodbye I felt the angels cry"?

3. The entire concept of the album is beneath her. I liked the approach or the idea of "musical memoirs" but the album wasn't reflecting her roots and discography at all. Instead it became a rather juvenile, at times even infantile album with an embarassing title (everything would have been better than "Imperfect Angel") and a chintzy cover.

Memoirs has a few quality moments (e.g. H.A.T.E.U.) but all in all the production and most of the lyrics as well as the presentation and packaging of the album is so unworthy, and that's why it pains me so much.

Wow! Go in! You highlighted the central problems with the album although I do love a few of the bops individually. Like I listen to Standing O whenever I'm pissed.

Memoirs is meant to be enjoyable. It's not trying to be a "future classic." It's her most pleasant album. That's why I'm a Memoirs stan. Mariah is able to turn what would be basic songs by other artists into actual gems (ie Betcha Gon' Know, H.A.T.E.U, More Than Just Friends)

I wonder how Mariah's current career would be if she had followed up E=MC2 with a MIAMTEC type of sound. I feel like, although she's obviously a legend, her current image was somehow damaged when she stuck with the radio friendly r & b sound for Memoirs.

I don't think any other song on the album was lead single worthy. Obsessed is far from the best song on the album, but it was radio friendly, while the actual highlights of the album weren't.

Obsessed was the only radio friendly song on the album, so there was really no choice.

I feel that album is too contemporary R&B for her though, and I like her sound a bit more balanced.

Betcha through Candy Bling is perfection though, along with It's A Wrap, The Impossible (Reprise) and More Than Just Friends. I still think it's hilarious that I called MTJF filler at first, and it's aged better than practically the whole album.
