The only examples I can think of it working in recent times were Rihanna, Maroon 5, and Taylor (though even that is arguable since her music has always had pop elements in it to begin with). Every other recent example-Shakira, J.Lo, Britney, Gaga, Jessie J, Nicki, Usher, Ne-Yo, etc. didn't end well.

No, it works almost every time. Picking singers past their prime is a bit of a diversion.
Their biggest albums:
Britney = BOMT (the most generic of all generic dance pop)
Shakira: Laundry Service (ditching roots to chase American dance pop trends)
J.Lo = J.Lo (album full of calculated radio hits)
Gags= The Fame (new for the US, very familiar to Europe)
Nicki = Pink Friday (hip pop crossover; Starships and Super Bass still her biggest hits)
Usher = Confessions (generic R&B; was able to comeback this decade by jumping on Guetta songs)
Jessie J= Who You Are (super generic, steal from everyone pop)
Ne-Yo= Idk, but his first three albums was generic R&B radio songs
