Discussion: Should Math be a Requirement?

Ive realized most of the people saying math is useless are the kids who are still in high school and haven't experienced real life yet. Good luck getting a high paying job with middle school math skills. There is really not any place you'll be successful at with those level of skills. Can't enter the medical field, obviously can't enter the math field/banking/financing/economics/engineering fields. It's like y'all don't want to have successful careers.

What I liked the most about it when you have to find the derivative and use it in relation of a number already here to then integrate.
Definitely one of the most challenging courses this year.

It doesn't matter if you got every question right on your calculus final, if you don't apply it in real life, WHICH YOU WON'T if you don't have a career in math, you WILL forget it.
If you learn a language but don't use it, YOU WILL FORGET IT

again i need some of your stats before i can make a more articulate argument

Changed, not eliminated. Math is taught in a ****** way, yes. But quite a lot of modern education is **** in many places.

Take multivariable calc down the road. You'll get a kii rereading this thread.

fpsd; these girls can't realize no matter HOW MUCH it's enforced we're still gonna forget it because it's useless.
There's no point in trying to enforce something so bad we're gonna forget. I would make an example with a Pop Girl's discography, but lemme not get the WP.

And I mean, business in general almost always requires "business calculus" at minimum, which is an entire course that details what Calc you need to know practically in business.

I feel like some of the posters are just lazy and don't want to do math homework/homework in general, and they are trying to find excuses for laziness

You sound kind of obnoxious right now like who cares if someone doesn't want to focus on the 100k careers???
What if they just want to be a primary special Ed teacher
Or a singer?

But I could understand why they might be focused on presenting STEM so heavily; they need more people to embrace and join those fields.

And even with all this exposure to STEM, still no one cares.

My school requires that class as a minimum, but that unfortunately does not mean that the students will retain the information.

Oh, maths is not optional, I choose to do Scientific 11th grade so we take the hardest Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
And if you mean this then I take it and it's a trip

first things first is i stressed the essential skills you get from maths (such as problem solving) . like of course knowledge has to be reinforced and practiced but life skills are more ingrained into your brain, so using your example you may forget some of the language but it would be harder to forget the pronunciation techniques the language taught you (such as the way the tongue rolls etc - esp true for tonal languages).

I'm saying tho! But as usual some of these pretentious members (not Retro or Element)
Are attempting to tell us how to live life based off of their own personal experiences.
Congrats that you use geometry or calculus everyday. The truth will remain that you don't NEED it ,unless you're perusing a career that involves it. They seem not to get it, though.

All science majors require very high levels of math.

Then I decided on Data Analytics and figured out the bad news myself that I'd have to not only take Calc 2, but potentially Calc 3 (which I don't mind, if it's supposed to be easier - I'll probably be more interested in it anyway) if my school doesn't fix the pre-reqs for one of my classes.
|
I have heard that Actuarial Science is one of the most difficult majors! It sounds interesting though. I am an Accounting major as of right now, but I am currently feeling a pull towards Business Economics instead. And yes, I have heard Calculus 3 is not as difficult as Calculus 2. I almost took Calc 3, but it wouldn't fit into my schedule... maybe one day!

Yes, it was really exciting and eye-opening to see how the relationships between all of the derivatives and integrals. When I took Calc 1, I understood math on a new level, and totally appreciated it more because I could see how it all connected so seamlessly.
