40. Sam Smith - Stay With Me "Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand / But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man... / Oh, won't you stay with me? / 'Cause you're all I need / This ain't love, it's clear to see / But darling, stay with me"
From one of the most bombastic hits of 2014 to one of the simplest: Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” charts at #40. Though this song never hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, its universal lyrics apply to everyone who hears this song. Aside from its deserved acclaim, this song is one of many beautifully crafted songs on Sam Smith’s debut album, all of which deserve the same level of success if released as singles.
39. Ed Sheeran - Sing "I need you, darling / Come on, set the tone / If you feel you're falling / Won't you let me know... / If you love me, come on, get involved / Feel it rushing through you from your head to toe"
This song is ridiculous. Basically the antithesis of everything we’ve come to expect from Ed Sheeran prior to the release of this single, “Sing” is a guilty pleasure in every sense of the term. From the feel-good Pharrell Williams production to the ubiquitous likeness of Ed Sheeran as a puppet in the music video, I find everything about this single choice incredible.
38. Cassadee Pope - I Wish I Could Break Your Heart "I wish I could break your heart / I wish I could bring you down / Just for a second, teach you a lesson about being alone in the dark / I wish I could make you cry / So hard you can barely breathe... / Well the truth is that I never ever wanna hurt you, baby / But it’d be nice to know that I could / Be strong enough to pull you under, throw you back a little thunder / Even though I never would / I wish I could break, I wish I could break your heart"
Queen Cassadee Pope returns to my Top 100 of 2014 with the second single off her debut album Frame By Frame, “I Wish I Could Break Your Heart.” Well, in keeping with the title of this single choice, I Wish This Song Had Seen More Success. Though “Wasting All These Tears” just barely scraped the top ten on country radio, IWICBYH stalled far too soon, and for some reason, her label decided to never release a third single. Queen Cassadee deserves better treatment than this.
37. Demi Lovato feat. Cher Lloyd - Really Don`t Care "I can't believe I ever stayed up writing songs about you / You don't deserve to know the way I used to think about you... / Now if we meet out on the street I won't be running scared / I'll walk right up to you and put one finger in the air... / Hey Demi, you picked the wrong lover / Should've picked that one, he's cuter than the other / I just wanna laugh, cause you're tryna be a hipster / Kick him to the curb, take a Polaroid picture"
This is the only song from the entire DEMI era to make my year-end countdown, and it should have been the second single. Though “Really Don’t Care” owes part of its success to Queen Cher Lloyd, Demi manages to carry this song on her own. I love this guitars in this song and the bratty lyrics, and the fact that it’s so easy to sing along to helped this song rank in my year-end Top 40.
36. Tove Lo - Out of Mind "How can you say I'll be alright? / What makes you think that I'll be fine? / Baby, you have to be completely out of your mind / To think that I could keep you out of mind... / You're out of your mind / To think that I could keep you out of mind"
As the closing track on Tove Lo’s Truth Serum EP, Out of Mind delivers an incredible explosion of emotion that I came to expect from Tove throughout 2014. “Out of Mind” deserves to be a smash hit single- it tackles the insurmountable feat of getting someone who no longer loves you out of your mind, but they remain in your thoughts.

39. Ed Sheeran – Sing
38. Cassadee Pope – I Wish I Could Break Your Heart
37. Demi Lovato feat. Cher Lloyd – Really Don’t Care
36. Tove Lo – Out of Mind
35. The Vamps feat. Demi Lovato - Somebody To You "I used to wanna be / Living like there's only me / But now I spend my time / Thinking 'bout a way to get you off my mind... / Everybody's tryna be a billionaire / But every time I look at you I just don't care / 'Cause all I wanna be, yeah all I ever wanna be, yeah, yeah / Is somebody to you"
On a happier note, Demi Lovato’s second appearance on my Top 100 of 2014 is her feature on “Somebody to You” by The Vamps. This pop candy earworm sounds a lot like a mashup between “All About You” by Hilary Duff and “Bitchin’ Summer” by Avril Lavigne, which is probably why it was so easy for me to get into. This song is all about attracting someone who has caught your eye.
34. Modern Baseball - Rock Bottom "My head is on the verge of exploding / No amount of aspirin or pizza could help this from hurting... / Can we hide like the fact that / My mouth smells like coffee and garlic / The five cups I had this morning are getting to me / To hell with class I'm skipping / Lets order food and sleep in... / There's no good reason why I should leave your bed tomorrow / We can watch planet earth and brainstorm tattoos"
This is likely to be the first song since “Five Minutes” by Lorrie Morgan that virtually no one on ATRL has ever heard of, and probably can’t be convinced to listen to. I love this song’s lyrical structure, like most songs I’ve heard by Modern Baseball. This song is all about being careless with people that you care about- and using words like “garlic” and “coffee” within the lyrics is just ingenious.
33. Ariana Grande feat. Zedd - Break Free "If you want it, take it / I should've said it before / Tried to hide it, fake it / I can't pretend anymore / I only wanna die alive / Never by the hands of a broken heart / Don't wanna hear you lie tonight / Now that I've become who I really are"
“Break Free” didn’t do much for me when I first heard it. Eventually, this song started growing on me and I loved everything about it from Ariana’s voice to Zedd’s production. For me at least, this overshadowed “Bang Bang” throughout the entirety of its chart run, and by the time I heard Ariana’s album, I couldn’t wait for “One Last Time” to be announced as a single. Ariana is STILL winning.
32. Defeater - I Don`t Mind "Something I've been meanin' to tell you / About three years and a day / I'd very much like to get married / Maybe have kids and move away... / And I don't mind / If we take our time / 'Cause I'm all yours / If you're all mine."
Oh, ATRL probably hasn’t heard of this song either. “I Don’t Mind” by Defeater is basically poetry put to music, and I adore it. The acoustic guitar is so gorgeously simple against the singer’s vocals that anyone could sing this song and personalize it. Being in love and wanting it to last is the backbone of this song, and it is an incredibly relatable example of what a well-constructed yet modestly executed song can sound like.
31. Charli XCX - Boom Clap "You're picture perfect blue / Sunbathing on a moon / Stars shining as your bones illuminate / First kiss just like a drug / Under your influence / You take me over, you're the magic in my veins / This must be love... / Come on to me, come on to me now"
Charli XCX makes her second appearance on my Top 100 of 2014 with “Boom Clap.” Charli’s writing and style are captivating, and her music deserved to be consumed by mainstream audiences. While this song suffered a bit because it was overplayed by radio, “Boom Clap” still ranks as one of the most impressive tracks by a ‘new’ artist in 2014.
