HAPPY 11TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO TOXIC
On Januray, 2004 "Toxic" was released as the second single of Spears' 4th studio album "In the zone". "Toxic" is an innovative dance-pop with elements of bhangra music, the song offers high standards of composition, production and performance and features varied instrumentation such as drums, synthetizers, violins, surf guitar and strings, The hook of "Toxic" samples a portion of "Tere Mere Beech Mein", from the soundtrack of the 1981 Hindi film Ek Duuje Ke Liye. However, it is not lifted verbatim from the score and mixes two different sections of the piece. Musically the song has been compared to the soundtracks of James Bond film series.
Produced by not so well known producers (back then) Bloodshy & Avant initially offered the song to Kylie Minogue, while Kylie was in the process of decission Britney listened to a demo of the song and was obsessed with it instantly and inmediately contacted Bloodshy & Avant who surprised told that they couldn't do anything as they had already given the song to Kylie Minogue, some reports indicate that Britney would leave them voice messages everyday and did everything to get the song in case Kylie didn't use it. After Kylie rejected it, without thinking it they went straight to Britney Spears to record it (it was meant to be), something that would take into a new higher level the producers and Britney's careers. Spears' career would be rejuvented and Bloodshy & Avant would be inmediately hired by Kylie Minogue and Madonna for their next studio albums.
The song became a massive hit around the globe, topped the charts in 8 countries and reached the top 10 in every country it was released, by the end of the year the charts' estimation portal Mediatraffic estimated it was the 5th biggest single of the 2004 year and the Biggest female single of the 2004 year, and despite being released in 2004 before the digital era it has managed to sell over 2 million digital downloads in the USA alone. The song was supported by one of Britney's most famous music videos, directed by Joseph Kahn the video features elaborated futuristic scenes as Britney portrays several characters, The video is considered to be one of the most expensive videos of all time with a budget of over 1 million dollars and got elevated cult following and iconic status often regarded as Britney's best music video.
"Toxic" was universally critically acclaimed, considered to be Britney's best critically received work in her career and also her Magnus Opus. The song was included on the RollingStone "100 best songs of the decade" list and the NME "100 best songs of the 00s" list. The song was named the world's second favorite song after "We are the champions" (Queen) in a 2005 Poll conducted by Sony Ericcson where over 700,000 people from 60 different countries voted. Blender included the song in their "500 Greatest songs since you were born" list, Pitchfork included the song in their "Greatest 500 songs of the 2000s" list. NPR included "Toxic" on their "Most important recordings of the decade" list, among some others. in 2005 the song won the Grammy award for "Best dance recording" becoming Britney and Bloodshy & Avant first and only Grammy trophy so far. To this day the Grammy winning song has gained modern pop classic status and its considered to be one of Britney's most universally known songs, since its release it has been sampled and covered by multiple artists, as well as frequent usage in visual media (TV shos and films) and Singing talent competition shows. "Toxic" has been performed in every Spears' concert show since its release and according to the own artist Britney it is her personal favorite song from her catalogue.
