I really loved Ariana's first album, Yours Truly, for it's throwback R&B/pop sound, but I must say this was like a step down from that album. Gone was that traditional sound, instead she hones in on the modern, catchy pop tunes. This album feels a bit too uneven and try-hard, after she released such a cohesive and timeless effort as her debut.
But she definitely nails it when she tries to do some proper pop stuff, as 4/5 of the songs under "Best" sound like timeless classics. Whereas for Hands On Me... I just can't control myself. As she carries on in her career, it's a definite that she will keep doing mainstream pop, but hopefully she finds a sound or element or flair that she can own to ensure her career carries on in the long run.
Best: Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea), One Last Time, Why Try, Love Me Harder (feat. The Weeknd), Hands On Me (feat. A$AP Ferg)

Their debut album was a really tight rollercoaster ride of quirkiness and all things strange. This album is a lot less immediate. Things are much slower and more understated, making it a lot harder to get into, and I admit I myself am not fully into it either. But it has it's fair share of standout tracks, though I may say they're nothing like those on An Awesome Wave. But sonically and thematically, I get where they were going for the album and it flows well, just that when you pick them apart it doesn't feel as solid.
Best: Every Other Freckle, Hunger of the Pines, Warm Foothills
After listening to the Truth Serum EP, I was so so hyped for this album. Sadly, it failed to meet my expectations. The EP had that euphoric feel with tracks like Out of Mind, Habits and Over. Instead, the album expanded on the more edgy topics and less out-of-this-world sounds. Sometimes, it got a little cringey (like talking about ****ing for life, or how you like your mates young). But still, each song is a huge earworm and they're all pretty catchy.
Best: Moments, Habits (Stay High), TImebomb, Talking Body
This wasn't actually what I thought a Charli XCX album would sound like. I was kind of expecting something more grittier and punkier, but this album stays more on the pop side. But the album is really packed with energy and personality, Charli really shows that she has that spunk that's makes her special. And the album (and her music in general) has an oldschool vibe which feels very 90s. I just think that she could totally show off a lot more and go a lot harder.
Best: Breaking Up, Sucker, Caught In the Middle, Need Ur Luv

One of the albums I listened to cuz it was in many year end critic lists hehe. This is like, an important album for all gays out there tbh. This album really made me think about my insecurities and basically all those stuff about my identity. Musically, the album is actually pretty slow-moving, but no song is too long and the album is really short. Barely anything other than Queen would probably appeal to the masses, the irregularities of each track may be unsettling. But the album is basically like a quick dose of confusion, emotions, vulnerability, everything, and it's poignant.
Best: Queen, Grid, Fool, Too Bright
