I don't think she couldn't sing the songs from Butterfly. Or at least her voice lost some of the agility it had about a year and a half prior.
When mariah use to sing live she could tackle her songs live. It wasn't just her singing, she was able to make her studio recordings seem so much more tame in comparison.
However, after 1996 Mariah was still a good live singer BUT it seemed she could no longer handle her songs live with the depth she used to. Instead it became a matter of "can she actually sing it like in the studio" which shouldn't be the case for someone of Mariahs talent.
I truly think Butterfly ruined what was left of her early 90's voice. She still has a voice that most popstars could only dream of but I feel that the magic, that special something you hear on songs like Vision Of Love, Hero, Fantasy isn't as present post Rainbow. There are instances where that special thing returns but it's more hit and miss now.
If mariah had skipped butterfly, took a break and went straight into Number One's I think her voice would've held on.
