60. Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z & Kanye West - Drunk In Love (Remix) "I've been drinking, I've been drinking / I get filthy when that liquor get into me... / Then I fill the tub up halfway then ride it with my surfboard, surfboard, surfboard / Graining on that wood, graining, graining on that wood / I'm swerving on that, swerving, swerving on that big body / Been serving all this, swerve, surfing all in this good, good"
There’s something about the Kanye West remix of Drunk In Love that slays me more than the original. Maybe it’s the more finely-tuned production, or Kanye’s verse, but something about this song is just . Though this song did not have much longevity for me, I’m not tired of it. Plus, there are two more Beyoncé songs to come that slayed me just a biT more.
59. Taylor Swift - Style "Midnight / You come and pick me up, no headlights / Long drive / Could end in burning flames or paradise... / You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye / And I got that red lip classic thing that you like... / You got that long hair, slicked back, white t-shirt / And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt / And when we go crashing down, we come back every time / 'Cause we never go out of style / We never go out of style"
Taylor.
Style is probably one of the biggest earworms on this countdown, and it hasn’t even been released as a single yet. Once it is released, it will slay the charts, there’s no question about that. The 1989 era shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The Charts section of ATRL might as well be renamed the Taylor Swift Base at this point. This is already Taylor’s third of four appearances on my Top 100 of 2014.
58. Disclosure feat. Sam Smith - Latch "You lift my heart up when the rest of me is down... / You, you enchant me even when you're not around / If there are boundaries, I will try to knock them down / I’m latching on, babe, now I know what I have found... / Now I've got you in my space / I won’t let go of you / Got you shackled in my embrace / I’m latching on to you"
Initially, I did not like Latch very much at all. After hearing the Acoustic Version of Latch on Sam Smith’s album, I started to like the original more. This song is so different that you really can’t help but to like it. Sam’s vocals are hypnotizing, and when combined with the beat, the entire production of this song is just hauntingly melodic. This is Disclosure’s only entry on my Top 100 of 2014, but Sam Smith has one more.
57. Lorrie Morgan - Five Minutes "You look so disbelieving / At my suitcase by the door... / Lately you've forgotten / What loving me is about... / You've got five minutes / To tell me what I've needed to hear / You've got five minutes / To show me that your really sincere / That's not much time to change my mind / It'll take a miracle no doubt / And you've got five minutes / To figure it out"
What can I say about this song? In what is probably the most unexpected choice on my Top 100 of 2014, Five Minutes by Lorrie Morgan slays nearly half of the songs on this list to enter at #57. Why? This song is damn good. Didn’t I already say that country made a comeback for me in 2014? Five Minutes was originally released in 1989 and hit #1 on the Billboard Country charts in 1990, but it slays my Top 100 of 2014. Check this one out if you’re ready to tell off your significant other.
56. Charli XCX - Break the Rules "I don't wanna go to school / I just wanna break the rules / Boys and girls across the world / Putting on our dancing shoes / Going to the discotheque / Getting high and getting wrecked / I don't wanna go to school / I just wanna break the rules"
In the first of Charli XCX’s three entries on my Top 100 of 2014, Charli tells us all about how she doesn’t want to go to school. While the lyrics are somewhat juvenile, I love them. This entire song is an ode to embracing your youth and teenage years. Who the hell wants to go to school? Though I don’t believe many discotheques are around these days, the production on this song is stellar.
