Tell me about it. Spill that tea.
Basically Jungsis slay in China and would have made SM a sh*t ton of money. SM knew this and they weren't stupid, which is why they gave them the Jessica & Krystal show.
They even prepared a mini album and shot an MV during that time, so SM was ready to cash in. SNSD can't match Jessica's popularity in China, their fanmeets have struggled to sell tickets and Yoona is the only popular member there. Taeyeon did some Chinese ballads but she's boring and I don't think they care for her that much.
Jessica alone is super popular over there, add Krystal and SM would have had a very successful sub-unit in China. In Korea, Krystal is rapidly gaining more popularity from her dramas, and Jessica was already established as a main vocalist of SNSD and personality in her own right.
The same story in Japan, where Jessica is popular and was seen talking Japanese with her Japanese friend on J&K. SM obviously added that storyline on purpose to appeal to Japanese fans before the sub-unit debut.
Then we can factor in the fact that both of them are American and have huge international appeal because they are both native English speakers. Their English covers were popular at SMTOWN and they could have potentially promoted in the US or Europe without any language issues.
Then we can also factor in the fact that both of them are seriously pretty and attract endorsements and CFs from companies in Korea and China due to their image and appeal. Jessica and Krystal both get tons of CFs and endorsements, and sub-unit would have increased their appeal to these companies, making even more money for SM.
So basically, all of y'all saying Jessica & Krystal would flop as a sub-unit are wrong. Their show was very popular, and SM was planning a season 2 in time for their debut.
They look great on stage when they can be bothered, and given the right song they would have slayed. Plus they would have had the support of both Sones and f(x) fans united.
Even now after Jessica's departure from SNSD they still have the potential to do well as a subunit, especially in China where they are literally begging Jessica to release new music.
Anyhow, you have RafaelBuzz to thank for this essay. Happy birthday Rafi.
