You are right. And you kind of represent GP which is important. It's also the reason why I knew THIS LOVE would flop like long long time ago.
But Taylor has a big advantage the other stars do NOT have, her flopped songs some times sell the albums to people like Dani her pop songs sell more albums to GP.
For me THIS LOVE is my favorite because it represents the growth of Taylor as a woman: After SAD BEAUTIFUL TRAGIC, ALL TOO WELL and WE ARE NEVER EVER GETTING BACK TOGETHER, Taylor Swift grew up together with THIS LOVE and became closer to get true love and happiness.
As a whole whole project, 1989 represents the growth of Taylor as a musician, that's why it's such a huge success when most people predicted she would flop transitioning from country to pop.

Besides sad and happy, I intend to say THIS LOVE is a freedom song, freedom as in the whole album 1989.

Until 1989, Taylor Swift found THIS LOVE and her freedom, in some way, THIS LOVE came back, means saying goodbye to the past tragic, eventually don't need to remember it all too well. I THINK, Taylor finally found her freedom, becomes closer to her true love and happiness.

Edit: Comparing with WANEGBT, her first number one on Billboard Hot 100 chart, I prefer THIS LOVE even though it will flop, but Taylor herself grows at the same time.

The pain of growth gave us a lot of masterpieces like ALL TOO WELL, similar with transitioning from country to pop with 1989, Taylor Swift is also at a turning point, THIS LOVE is a symbol of this, from Never Ever to finding the sad beautiful love and focusing and all the good things of THIS LOVE and not remembering too well about the tragic, the massively successful SHAKE IT OFF and BLANK SPACE is just the beginning (not the ending) of this new direction which I'm so happy for her about.
