This is kinda the perfect song to use to get into the album in my opinion. It actually has a "breakdown" of sorts and is by far the most upbeat song on the album. Still SUPER ethereal and all that nonsense too though.
44. Cibo Matto - "10th Floor Ghost Girl"
The Funk influences on this song are the strongest on the album! It's also one of the most concept-heavy on the album, but it's just so damn listenable and interesting (musically AND lyrically). When I saw then live, this was by far the most energetic number from their new album.
43. Kelis - "Forever Be"
For the longest time, Rumble was my choice for the album (Jerk Ribs is 2013 so it's not an option), but I'm glad I went with this one. The strings are beautiful and it's really nice hearing Kelis doing a song so uplifting without any sarcasm or subversiveness. It's also the track where her husky vocals really shine.
"eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh" this song is very Umbrella, kinda. But a more Indie-Pop/Trip-Hop kind. It has a menacing vibe to it and is full of emotion and nice harmonies.
39. Kendrick Lamar - "i"
I had a huge argument with my sister about this song. She was going on and on and on about how he was A SERIOUS artist or some ******** like that and he shouldn't do happy songs. I actually saw that complaint a lot. But the fact is Kendrick is expanding his repertoire and he made an amazing empowerment anthem.
38. Perfume Genius - "Queen"
Speaking of empowerment anthems! This one I (obviously) relate to a lot more, but I also love the drudging feel to it. It's an amazing song, and definitely needs to be listened to intently by insecure gay teenagers who just need to own up to their fabulousness, no?
37. Com Truise - "Declination"
Those Prince-inspired drums make this song a perfect synth-pop revival track. The autotuned vocals singing something about space or something are cool too, but it's mainly about those drums and that bass and all those sooouuundzzz.
36. Azealia Banks - "Ice Princess"
The chorus is definitely the usual 90s/House sound, even if her singing is a little bit more subdued, but what makes this song hit hard is the verses with a more 'traditional' modern Hip-Hop sound, or really it's just the balance of the two that makes the song hit so hard. We get the best of both worlds.
Great trance-ish music. I'm not even sure what genre label to put on this actually lol. But her singing is quite beautiful and the song has a captivating feel overall.
34. Trust - "Rescue, Mister"
That high pitched synth hook is the most 90s thing Trust has ever done! It really shocked me when I first heard it but I loooooooooved it. Definitely one of the most instrumentally memorable tracks I've heard from him.
One of the many nominees for best melancholy Pop track of the year. What makes it great is that it still has this sort of bubblegum feel to it, though you can FEEL the PAIN in her voice.
32. How To Dress Well - "Words I Don't Remember"
HTDW has this nerdy white boy appeal that works extra well in this song. Also the vocal melodies are fantastic and the song overall is extremely dynamic. Need more like this.
31. Shamir - "If It Wasn't True"
Shamir has this AMAZING androgynous sounding voice that fits the 80s R&B sound so well. Oh yeah, the breakdown is pretty good too I guess. It's very Blood Orange at points but he definitely is a little more aggressive which I absolutely lurrrve.
OMG Yes, exactly the argument I had with my best friend. We're huge Kendrick fans and he said he didn't like it and after all I made him confess and admit that it's the beat being to happy the reasong he doesn't like it.
But the truth is this is amazing, I loved it since the first listen.
Also Ice Princess
Wow tons of great stuff! I loved Queen, i, Words I Don't Remember, Ice Princess, all around a great update.
Aaaand I had a similar situation with that Kendrick song where everyone thought it was 'weak' but I thought it was a cool style for him and its a great song!
Speaking of empowerment anthems! This one I (obviously) relate to a lot more, but I also love the drudging feel to it. It's an amazing song, and definitely needs to be listened to intently by insecure gay teenagers who just need to own up to their fabulousness, no?
Yes at "Forever Be"!!! Totally agree about her vocals. T
his Cibo Matto is a bop so I really really need to get into the rest of their stuff.
I was kind of disappointed with "i" and I would like him to do different stuff but not really feeling this direction.
Both "Queen" and "Ice Princess" are among my favorites this year, too, but my favorite inclusions in this update are HTDW and Shamir!!!
