Why can't Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea sell like Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran?

All three have scored multiple top 10 hits from their respective albums. Fancy was the biggest in the U.S but was fairly local while Problem and Stay With Me were bigger WW. Don't was a top 10 in the U.S and first for Ed. He's followed it up with TOL which has already gone top 5 and will most likely go top 3. Sam had a further top 5 with INTOO and Iggy had the #3 peaking BW. Ariana has scored 3 other top 10 hits after problem this era. However

Sam Smith ITLH - 3M WW

Ed Sheeran X - 3.5M WW

Ariana Grande ME - 1.2M WW

Iggy Azalea - TNC <1M WW

Why is this the case?

There are many artists who don't write their own music and are successful, there are also many artists who write their own music and aren't successful.

I can see Iggy's numbers because her album isn't that good, and her hits are so...

But Ariana's My Everything is one of the best albums this year. Males always sold more albums though. Ariana & Iggy are bigger names so whatever.

Sam and Ed appeal to ALL ages, including the older generation who still buys albums. Iggy and Ariana appeal more to people under the age of 30, a population that does not buy albums.

Easy, their music is more GP friendly, people sees them as credible new artists, while Ariana and Iggy are good for some boops and that's it, a katy tea.

They're more Pop/mainstream and appeal to a younger demographic mainly. Sam and Ed have a really large demographic that they appeal to.

Sam's album was soo good and I don't use Ed but i finally heard him sing and was blown the hell away

Because they don't have as much widespread intergenerational appeal. Yesterday at work I was reading in the wedding announcements section of the newspaper that Ed Sheeran had 3 of the most popular top 6 wedding songs of the year and Sam Smith had 2. The other one went to John Legend (All Of Me)
