I have a few friends that actually like Lana, they discovered her in 2013, but even then she still had no big hits, just a small/moderate remix song. Carly was the new comer of 2012. Adele was 2011, Lorde 2013, Iggy 2014.

Lana was the It-girl in 2012, there is no denial about that. She was everywhere. And her album was at around 3.4 or 3.6 million by the end of the year. Video Games and Summertime Sadness were huge hits in Europe (especially Germany), Born To Die (the song) was another Top10 for her in the UK. She has gotten a lot of airplay in Europe, too.
She outsold Madonna's whole chartrun with MDNA in the UK within just a week, selling 117k. Look up all the certifications she has gotten all around the world. She has gotten MTV, ECHO and Brit awards and plenty of other nominations, she had the huge H&M campain with her face everywhere. I live in a big city and trust me, I couldn't walk 200m without seeing her face. It was annoying af.
Regardless if you love or hate Lana Del Rey,but if you were slightly interested in pop music and you were on planet Earth, there was no way you could have not noticed her.
Her album was the 4th biggest selling album of 2012. That was the biggest debut that year.
