And not TMTC?
If the heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison every Sunday
My Church offers no absolutes
She tells me, 'Worship in the bedroom.'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you.
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
Just a sample of lines better than any single lyric in DH
Other top 10 songs that were also better: Stay With Me, Chandelier, Ain't It Fun, Don't....

 the accuracy.
And I hate the DH lyric "Would you mind, would you mind?" It's so clear they needed a 3-syllable phrase to repeat twice and picked something random. Would you mind what? That you're about to be blown away by the perfect storm? Obviously. Lazy lyrics. Levitating like a bird is a lazy simile too. Taking flight of your own volition is not exactly "levitation." And let's NOT get into the lyrics in the rap.

I think TMTC is on equal level. Hold on, I'm doing a lyrical analysis of Dark Horse and Blank Space right now. Chandelier and Stay With Me aren't better lyrically. Aint It Fun is kinda terrible, as is don't so I haven't listened to the lyrics.

Katy vs Taylor: A Lyrical Analysis
by GotSkill
I knew you were
You were gonna come to me
And here you are
But you better choose carefully
‘Cause I, I’m capable of anything
Of anything and everything
(1 cliche, perfect setting up the dark and mysterious mood. First verse starts vague and builds up until it hits the climax in the chorus.)
Make me your Aphrodite
Make me your one and only
But don’t make me your enemy, your enemy, your enemy
(1 cliche, sets up "black widow" type of mood of a poisonous romance. Allusion to Greek Goddess of beauty, contrasted with the concept of being a one and only set up for a toxic love.)
So you wanna play with magic
Boy, you should know what you're falling for
Baby do you dare to do this?
Cause I’m coming at you like a dark horse
Are you ready for, ready for
A perfect storm, perfect storm
Cause once you’re mine, once you’re mine
There’s no going back
(no cliches, perfect buildup that leads to the dark, icy synth drop. Powerful warning lines (so you wanna play with magic?))
Mark my words
This love will make you levitate
Like a bird
Like a bird without a cage
But down to earth
If you choose to walk away, don’t walk away
(1 cliche, sets up sense of longing in the second verse if he walks away. Imagery of uncaged bird gives sense of rebellion and freedom. Levitation/witch imagery sets up dark mood even better)
It’s in the palm of your hand now baby
It’s a yes or no, no maybe
So just be sure before you give it all to me
All to me, give it all to me
(1 cliche, Brings back warning from the first verse)
So you wanna play with magic
Boy, you should know what you're falling for
Baby do you dare to do this?
Cause I’m coming at you like a dark horse
Are you ready for, ready for
A perfect storm, perfect storm
Cause once you’re mine, once you’re mine (love trippin')
There’s no going back
Uh
She’s a beast
I call her Karma (come back)
She eats your heart out
Like Jeffrey Dahmer (woo)
Be careful
Try not to lead her on
Shorty’s heart is on steroids
Cause her love is so strong
You may fall in love
When you meet her
If you get the chance you better keep her
She's sweet as pie but if you break her heart
She'll turn cold as a freezer
That fairy tale ending with a knight in shining armor
She can be my Sleeping Beauty
I’m gon’ put her in a coma
Woo!
Damn I think I love her
Shorty so bad, I’m sprung and I don’t care
She ride me like a roller coaster
Turned the bedroom into a fair (a fair!)
Her love is like a drug
I was tryna hit it and quit it
But lil' mama so dope
I messed around and got addicted
(No cliches, powerful, controversial reference to Jeffrey Dahmer. Alludes to myths and legendary love stories to give the song an antiquated, hazy feel)
So you wanna play with magic
Boy, you should know what you're falling for (you should know)
Baby do you dare to do this?
Cause I’m coming at you like a dark horse (like a dark horse)
Are you ready for, ready for (ready for)
A perfect storm, perfect storm (a perfect storm)
Cause once you’re mine, once you’re mine (mine)
There’s no going back
–––––––––––––––––
Nice to meet you
Where you been?
I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven, sin
Saw you there and I thought oh my god
Look at that face, you look like my next mistake
Love's a game, wanna play
New money, suit and tie
I can read you like a magazine
Ain't it funny rumors fly
And I know you heard about me
So hey, let's be friends
I'm dying to see how this one ends
Grab your passport and my hand
I could make the bad guys good for a weekend
(3 cliches. Some lines are weak, such as "saw you there and I'm like Oh my god look at that face" which give a very 15 year old lyrics feeling. Other lines are stronger, like "make the bad guys good for a weekend". Mixed messages in the verse leave the reader confused.)
[Pre-Chorus]
So it's gonna be forever
Or it's gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it's over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game
(2 cliches. It starts out weak but gets stronger with the long list of ex lovers line)
[Chorus]
Cause we're young and we're reckless
We'll take this way too far
It'll leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
But I got a blank space baby
And I'll write your name
(3 cliches. Forced rhyme with the word scar. The only strong part of this is the repeated part from the pre chorus)
[Verse 2]
Cherry lips
Crystal skies
I could show you incredible things
Stolen kisses, pretty lies
You're the king baby I'm your queen
Find out what you want
Be that girl for a month
But the worst is yet to come
Oh no
Screaming, crying, perfect storms
I could make all the tables turn
Rose garden filled with thorns
Keep you second guessing like oh my god
Who is she? I get drunk on jealousy
But you'll come back each time you leave
Cause darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream
(3 cliches. Also notable is the line stolen from dark horse itself with perfect storms. The best part of this verse is the "nightmare dressed like a daydream" part.)
[Pre-Chorus]
So it's gonna be forever
Or it's gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it's over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game
[Chorus]
Cause we're young and we're reckless
We'll take this way too far and leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
But I got a blank space baby
And I'll write your name
[Bridge]
Boys only want love if it's torture
Don't say I didn't say I didn't warn you
Boys only want love if it's torture
Don't say I didn't say I didn't warn you
(no cliches. Lyrically weak as this part is melodically driven (although a direct copy of Royals). The double negatives weaken the lyrics further)
[Pre-Chorus]
So it's gonna be forever
Or it's gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it's over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game
[Chorus]
Cause we're young and we're reckless
We'll take this way too far and leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
But I got a blank space baby
And I'll write your name

Oh, that's what I get for listening to the song twice.
Although it's not like that's a great lyric. But you're wrong about Chandy If I weren't on mobile we could do a line by line comparison

So you wanna play with magic?
Boy you should know what you're falling for
Baby do you dare to do this?
Cuz I'm comin' at cha like a dark horse
Are you ready for, ready for?
A perfect storm, perfect storm
Cuz once you're mine, once you're mine
There's no going back
---------------------
I could even write that chorus.

Okay judging Taylor strictly by lyrics and nothing else, she's better at telling a story.
There's a reason why "Saw you there and I thought "Oh my God, look at that face. You look like, my next mistake" is great because it instills a sense of imagery and setting.

That line would've been great on an album like Speak Now but if on an adult song like Blank Space it just seems childish.

I already said the bird/cage simile is weak.
The chorus is basic. Scorpio King could have written it. Not being bad does not make something GREAT. It's just ok. Basic and ok with familiar language (unlike Church).
Explain why "But down to earth" is a good lyric.
ZERO CLICHES in the rap?
- Karma is a "beast"
- Love = drug simile
- Sweet as pie
- Fairy tale/knight in shining armor
Not to mention the AWFUL, MESSY lyric about putting his girl in a coma. If anyone submitted that lyric in PH, you would drag them.
COLD AS A FREEZER

Karma being a beast is not a cliche.
Love = drug is cliche, but not a cliche
Sweet as pie yes
Alluding to a fairy tale is not cliched
Is someone submitted DH to PH I'd give them an 8
If someone submitted BS I'd give them a 7
If someone submitted TMTC I'd give them an 8. Theres weak lines there too, but I don't feel like doing another analysis
Truth is BS is the best song lyrically on 1989 other than clean and Taylor has taken a MAJOR step back in the songwriting department this era. She was on a good trajectory with songs like the FLAWLESS Begin Again
Slay Again
Took a deep breath in the mirror
He didn't like it when I wore high heels
But I do
Turn the lock and put my headphones on
He always said he didn't get this song
But I do, I do
Walked in expecting you'd be late
But you got here early and you stand and wave
I walk to you
You pull my chair out and help me in
And you don't know how nice that is
But I do
And you throw your head back laughing like a little kid
I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did
I've been spending the last eight months
Thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end
But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again
You said you never met one girl
Who had as many James Taylor records as you
But I do
We tell stories and you don't know why
I'm coming off a little shy
But I do
But you throw your head back laughing like a little kid
I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did
I've been spending the last eight months
Thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end
But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again
And we walked down the block to my car and I almost brought him up
But you start to talk about the movies that your family
Watches
Every single Christmas and I want to talk about that
And for the first time what's past is past
'Cause you throw your head back laughing like a little kid
I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did
I've been spending the last eight months
Thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end
But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again
But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again
I'd love to see any of you write a song like Dark Horse. We all know dark songs was my thing last season.

She's the giggle at a funeral
Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
Basically that 1 and the whole 2nd half of the second verse. Looking closer I think I'd give it a 9 but its not perfect.
