Nas was the J Cole like 15-20 years ago. Amazing lyricist, but not artistically driven.
How is 2014 Forest Hills Drive not artistically driven? I mean, he's no Kendrick or Kanye, but he certainly makes albums that are supported by artistry.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that Britney is almost an undisputed legend.
She set the modern mold for popstars and is a perfect embodiment of what pop was during the 2000s... controversy and all.
She's a pop music legend for sure. But she did everything Madonna had already done (with less quality too). To be honest, Britney was most interesting during her K Fed/Paris Hilton/shaving of the head era, and I'm saying this as a person who likes her a lot.
Illmatic was across-the-board acclaimed and didn't receive many awards, chart hits and has sold less than two million albums in the States and has gone on to be one of the most important albums in music. 2014 is nowhere near that, but it doesn't need accolades or awards to prove its quality or for people to like it.
That's like saying F.A.M.E. is a masterpiece because it got all of those awards (after obvious industry propaganda).
1. Illmatic is platinum.
2. Illmatic was his first album, he was virtually un-known at the time
3. Nas has numerous platinum plaques
4. Nas is actually cared about/important

Based my opinion off his first two albums. Haven't listened to 2014 Forest Hills Drive yet
I would've said no one cares about J. Cole a year and a half ago but clearly he is doing something right that my own choice RVPPER has not been able to
Jay-Z was more musically consistent, but even then, Holy Grail is a weedplate vs. Life Is Good, which is Nas' best album in years and legitimately a strong effort. Jay-Z spits a whole bunch of ********, and that's been the case since his comeback in 2006.
uilt up this kinda Lauryn Hill (lol who is a white equivalent??)-esque legend during the 14 years he was getting blown by undercover cops instead of releasing music.
