Girl there are no laws in countries targeting Muslims. Yes they face some discrimination but it's not like they're being persecuted worldwide. In fact Muslims are treated better in non-Muslim countries than non-Muslims are treated in Muslim countries.

That's not true. Algebra was used as far back as the Babylonians. You are talking about Al Khwarizmi. He never directly stated his religious beliefs. He could either be Zoroastrian or Muslim.

I mean, they didn't just make up the term infidel - that's in the Qur'an. That's how non-muslims are portrayed as less than human and expendable to the will of Allah.

Don't go around pretending this stuff isn't in there and that these people aren't getting their crazy ideas from your holy books.

all I can do as a white person is acknowledge the struggle.. but damn it's not until threads like this that I really become cognizant and feel terrible for socially oppressed people like Muslims, or any other overly stereotyped group.. and I'm not claiming to be a perfect, completely unprejudiced human being but every time I make even the smallest of generalizations about a culture / religion, I have to kick myself and remember that there are already so many terrible people in the world (many of you are proof of that) and that there's not enough room for more ***holes on this planet..

Megalomania can be aided and abetted by religion. Mega churches, Evangelicials, Popes, etc. all shaking down the poor so they can have Italian loafers and finely woven dresses and outfits.

WW1 & WWII don't even come close the lives and families destroyed by religion. Crusades, Inquisition, Ireland, Middle East, etc.

The crusades and inquisition used religion as an excuse. When you actually analyze history and people's actions where religion was used as the casus belli they all were political in nature. The crusades were nothing more than to weaken the power of merchants, the byzantine empire (which worked, the French sacked the capital) and as a way for wealth and exploitation. The inquisition was used to push out the Muslim kingdoms from Iberia and to convert them as a way to stabilize the area and gain power.

In fact why do you think after the crusades people in Europe began to advance? Islam was what preserved the ancient knowledge of Rome. In fact had it not been for Islam we may not be speaking now as the Europeans wouldn't have a glimpse of the wealth and knowledge.

Really western religion seems to always be the topic of this debate. But what about eastern religion? The Indian religions are a heck of a lot more peaceful yet people ignore them because it makes their argument against religion moot.

I don't understand why people are comparing ignorance. For the most part, at least in the US, racism/Islamophobia/homophobia/misogyny/etc. are all upheld and supported by the same types of people. I think most people that identify as progressive would be against all of them

The only extremely troubling sentiment held by some progressives is the extreme pro-Israel, anti-Palestine rhetoric that is so prevalent here. But even with that things are slowly getting better.

I say all of this to explain that ignorance and hate can be found anywhere, just like empathy and kindness can be found anywhere. What the media shows you isn't always the truth. Tolerance must be taught and reinforced if we want these prejudices to die.

I would gladly defend Islam over such blatantly ignorant hate any day of the week. I see issues within the religion itself, but I see more problems with closed minded ethnocentrism than I do religion..... which is pathetic honestly that a system of beliefs from over 2000 years ago holds up better and promotes more worldwide unity / peace than the people who often vocally oppose it
