Of course we refer to it in our own way : 11 Settembre in Italy. But the terminology 9/11 is passed on with this format mostly because it refers to an American event

If you've ever done MLA format or learned another European language you've used DD/MM/YYYY.
That being said for me as an American MM/DD/YYYY is 100% more natural to me. And I actually like the sound better TBH.
