For most — if not all — of the movie, we’re riveted on Moore’s face, simply watching her think.

Moore is marvelous at evoking the distance between Alice’s brain and tongue, which lengthens in every scene along with Alice’s sudden emotional vulnerability as the words become more difficult to access.

Moore’s face — with is ginger-ish tendency to flush on cue — is endlessly watchable. But her voice is just as expressive — or, in some cases, expressively inexpressive. I’ve always treasured her performance as a hard-core **** actress in Boogie Nights, especially in the scenes where the character is “acting” and her voice turns mechanical, rhythmless, dead: It takes a great actor to convincingly impersonate a non-actor. There’s a touch of that deadness in Still Alice when Alice begins to detach from the world and to repeat things by rote — she’s an actress who has forgotten her lines. Those rare moments when Alice finds her voice again — when she’s “there” — become even more precious.

It’s hard to be flip about a film that attempts and sometimes — thanks to a great actress — succeeds in dramatizing one of our most unfathomable — and heartbreaking — mysteries. What remains when the brain’s higher functions shut down? What can we say a person is?
