Applause is super commercial and pop (with the exception of the weird verses). Anaconda is evidently polarizing and entirely hip hop, as seen as the response to the single cover, song itself, and the video.

Anaconda got a fraction of the radio support Applause did, especially on the format that drives single sales: pop radio.

Applause went on to be one of Gaga's biggest radio hits, hence why it had longevity. It's an entirely nonoffensive song with a big pop chorus and electropop beat.
