How? He's not some massive international star. I've never seen his videos on TV, heard his music on any form of Radio or Social Media. So its really not embarrassing. He's obviously the random indie artist filler nod this year.
Beck is one of the most influential Alternative artists in history. His song "Loser" is one of the most important songs of all time and arguably the best Alternative song of the 90's. Calling him "random indie filler" shows that you're between the ages of 10 and 15.
I'm 20 actually. And I have simply never heard of him. He is not mainstream and every year the Grammys try to have credibility by nominating some artist who is odd or not mainstream (Sarah last year, Esperanza Spalding a few years back etc.)

He might not be a pop girl, so not surprising that people on ATRL aren't familiar with his work, but it was always likely that one AOTY nomination was going to come from the rock/alternative categories (I was hoping St. Vincent). Or maybe they were actually picking nominees based off of the quality of their work and not how much they've sold or whether they're mainstream or not
