It depends on when it leaks, what the release plan is, etc. The leak of Applause definitely got ARTPOP off on the wrong foot.

Well, it kinda depends on what we're talking about. Like someone just said, "Anaconda" leaked early and still managed to do well, which makes me think that for artists who typically have their pre-release singles become growers, it rlly doesn't matter.

However, as we've seen with artists whose pre-release singles usually debut high, things can turn out great ("Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" and "Roar" rushing to the top of iTunes), a bit muddled ("Applause" missing a top 2 peak bc it didn't have it's video streams first week like originally planned), or disastrous ("Judas" having its potential first week chart points halved bc it debuted late in the tracking week instead of on a Tuesday like planned. the whole single campaign was horribly managed tho)

Well, if it ever happened, there would be two options:

1. Scrapping the single if the artist and their team is not ready to start the era, if they did not and decided not to release it on iTunes immediatly, then it would flop because of the label
2. Releasing it on iTunes immediatly, if the demand is here and people want to hear it, they will buy and won't care about the original release date scheduled 6 months later (Rihanna would probably be a good example).

In both cases, the song would not flop because of the fact the song leaked 6 months before the original release date (but once again, I barely see how it could ever happen).
