i always just try to have as much personality as possible, show off what makes you different as much as you can and don't be afraid and people will have an opinion of you other than just "that one kid". i always say exactly what comes to my mind with no filter and that gives people an impression. maybe i just am different from average in general but i doubt i'm /that/ different, i'm just not afraid of expressing myself honestly
if you mean actually think for yourself, just think about stuff a lot and consider every question you can about it. that's what i do and i like to think i'm independent
