Well it had a release date and promo before hand, but they probably heard it was gonna leak and decided to release it a week earlier. Didn't he anounce that too? So people knew the album was coming then. It wasn't a total surprise. I do think Beyoncé was influenced by him and Jay/Kanye.

But no one knew when Bey's album was coming and no one knows when Rihanna's album is coming.

A surprise release is frustrating. You spend a year or more in the dark, not knowing a thing, and then they drop and you're just like....
