Yes. Erotica was sooooooooo risky.
Songs about sex. Groundbreaking.
The 90s was full of songs of that nature.

People have already mentioned Erotica (for obvious reasons) and American Life (the most un-Madonna Madonna album ever) but two that haven't had enough mentions are Like a Prayer and Ray of Light. People don't think of them as "risky" now because they're risks that paid off and did very well commercially, but both of those albums could have completely bombed.

Well, there's one album you clearly haven't listened to.
Three of the songs are about sex (Erotica, Fever and Where Life Begins) - the rest are about depression (Bad Girl), homosexuality (Deeper and Deeper), AIDs (In This Life), gay rights (Why's It So Hard) and self-identity (Secret Garden) amongst other things. Not to mention half the album is essentially spoken-word, and what can only be described as house-acid-jazz-pop.

I would mention American Life, too. Avril's The best damn thing was risky and Shakira's She wolf. Both marked big changes in Style/Image and Sound compared to the previous eras.

Even when I mentioned American Life here, I agree. The album itself was not risky at all. The only risk was the video.
But that video in itself was arguably the riskiest ever released by a pop girl, because it was purely political/critical of US foreign policy, US society and Bush in a time when US was overly patriotic after the 9/11 and the war in Iraq just started. It was so anti-American, yet so on point that even when it was never officially released, its mere existence caused the radio ban and her fall into disfavour in her home country from which she never fully recovered and probably never will.

The only geniune answers are:
Born this Way
Erotica
My December
And Bionic.
Born This Way was risky. Sonically and vocally it was on the weirder side of pop. Just because something is successful doesn't mean it isn't risky. And, lets not forget the album is based around religion, gay rights, womans rights and depression.

you saying Gaga's album are just ridiculous, her album are basic and follows the trend of the period!
BTW (single) was a rip off of a great pop song and this gave it most of publicity

This whole post.
Rated R, Dignity and Blackout are generic, run of the mill pop albums. I love these albums, mind you. But, it's the truth.
I don't get how you can list these albums as risky then call Gaga basic. It's just a massive contradiction.

Actually, no. Madonna paved the way to make songs about sex acceptable, but the tracks on Erotica weren't actually about sex as someone pointed out. So do your research before you comment. And maybe have a listen to Erotica, which is Madonna's best album.

I'm sorry but how on earth was BTW on the weirder side of pop? It's pure pop. It's brilliant. But it's certainly in no way risky. It's practically lifted from The Fame Monster blueprint.

How on earth is rated r generic
Gaga doesn't have one single song in her discography, half as risky as G4L or a song as risky as russian roulette
BTW was a basic and generic record which. A pop album that is not risky in any way, shape or form much less when compared to rated r

The responses in here.
All of Janet's albums since Control were risky in some way..especially TVR.
Madonna's "Erotica" and "American Life" were risky(and I don't care for either albums--the irony).
Rihanna's "Rated R" was risky only because the thing that shall not be named was still fresh in people's mind.
Legend X with "Stripped" and "B2B"..and somewhat Bionic because she never explored Electronic music like that before.

Of the current pop girls, Christina is the only one I think take risk with her albums, particularly Stripped, Back 2 Basics and Bionic.
If we look into some of the pop legend then Madonna and Janet was always taking risk with almost every album.
