It's hard to maintain it for that long. MJ, Knee, Madonna are prob top in that aspect. Bey is definitely moving up there in that celeb/press aspect. She's been it for the last few years.

I feel it's because her 'media arc' ended. America's sweetheart becomes trainwreck and then returns to glory is a neat narrative. America's former sweetheart becomes lifeless robot doesn't have the same spark.

I feel like for most of the older popstars, you're only as relevant as your current music/media coverage. Idk a single Cher song except for Believe, but I know her because she has been in the media for my entire life. Madonna is kind of similar in that sense. I'm sure everyone knows her because of the name-recognition but she's not some huge star.

I knew Whitney for her personal life and craziness growing up. I also knew "I wanna dance with somebody" but it's wasn't some hugely referenced 80's classic like MJ's catalogue, at least for me.

I've known Cyndi forever because her two classics are ****ing huge here. Poor everyone.

I have come to accept that Madonna probably won't get another big smash hit. It was a great run.

Britney I still have hope for since she is still quite young and I refuse to believe that it's a wrap for her. But it might be.

I feel like this is somewhat a lie perpetuated on ATRL. She's So Unusual didn't even sell 12 million copies worldwide, which is big but not HUGE for 1983.

The issue here is that Madonna clearly gave more ****s about her career than almost anyone else ever (which is a good thing and I applaud her for that) and worked to extend her hitmaking power, while Britney spontaneously ran out of ****s to give after 2006 and never restocked until Vegas happened (meaning four sequential eras, despite producing eight or nine respectable hit singles altogether, did a lot worse than they could have).
