Background melody, i.e. the melody of the track. He composes the backing track and produces them (including the vocals, yes), but lyrics in particular are not his domain. To my knowledge the last song he was the sole topliner on was Since U Been Gone.
Max does have
some say in the topline, but for that he's more just responsible for the approval process (e.g. writers often run their lyrics by him before they go to record them; apparently he's a stickler for syllable counts and such).
