I'm sure there were also huge Britney fans who bought multiple copies of Oops! in its first week.
Pretty much every big album, especially the big pop ones, has some fans who buy multiple copies (certainly not the majority). You could not prove that more fans by multiple albums today than in the past, so I don't see why it's a relevant point to bring up. If 1989 breaks the record, it's totally deserved.
