I think this decision is less about money, and more about her label/her making a statement about the music industry, she's coming back at some point for sure, but Spotify will have to adapt its business model first.

Spotify, with its large number of subscribed customers was an alternative to that for a considerable chunk of people, but not anymore. So if the intention was to take back home as much money as possible in a climate where album sales aren't even the major source of an artists' income, all this has truly done is pointed a cluster of more people in the illegal direction. Now she is getting zero revenue, from a service that was very much legal, right behind an increase in illegal downloads of her content.

Actually, many have an issue with how much revenue they receive from individual streams, which is understandable. However, that's still better than the $0 they would receive from piracy.

It's a balancing game. You have to build up a fanbase that'll buy your music if you care about the bottom line, and then the streams + cash are just extra revenue which are a good thing compared to piracy.

So yeah, I guess I can see why it's so conflicting for smaller artists.
Taylor Swift is fine tho. People are buying her albums regardless so she is just losing money.

The only ok thing about this is that it's still in their catalogue and if you get a local track and give it the right tags it will still link up and play the 320kps. That even works for 1989/Beyoncé and the like.

Sis, Ed Sheeran said he got a check of like 10U$ or something for them once, and his album was like one of the most played of all-time.
