There are a lot of people on here who have a strange pride in only stanning people "since their debut" and either refuse to listen to something new, or try to prove that they've been a fan since day 1 after discovering them- but I don't think there's anything shameful about discovering an artist later on in their career. 
I found out about Janet through a suggestion too. It was actually ALIEN (before he joined ATRL, I don't think he posts much now, anyway) and I was totally blown away with what I heard. I mean, I knew some of Janet's work through my mom, but that was just mainly her radio friendly hits, no raunchy/intimate album tracks or anything.

All For You is a GREAT album to get into her
Mine was Rhythm Nation and my god I was BLOWN AWAY at how amazing it was and how perfectly the entire album flowed good god. then I was OBSESSED with the janet. album for the longest time and then my obsession turned to Damita Jo then The Velvet Rope and now I'm obsessed with All For You
I never really got into Control although it has some good jams. I HATE 20 YO its so bad and Discipline doesn't really exists for me although it was 2 or 3 good songs
